So basically I am buying an Xbox 360 some time this week.
I have been drafted into the Norwegian army, and will leave for that the 13th of january. Having 1 year without games makes me want to have an awesome time gaming for the remainder of my undrafted life.
Not being the fastest gamer, and working 5 days a week, I might be able to beat a game (optimistically) in 1-2 weeks.
So I can beat around 5-10 games in that time.
Now for the question: Having played pretty much no Xbox games before, what games should I finish?
I have one set in stone, and that is Mercs 2. Also, my friend is nagging me to get GoW2. Money is not much of an object. Has to be out before the end of the year.
I'm hoping that you guys can help me.
Links to trailers, reviews and the like would be greatly appreciated, as would personal opinions.
As for what games, I am into most things action or adventure. Sports/racing games, notsomuch.
(PS: already beat Mass Effect and Oblivion on my PC)
Days left: 68.
Posts
Fallout 3 (If your PC is a rig for for that version instead)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
Ninja Gaiden 2 ( If you're into hardcore action)
I'd say Gears of War 2, but I have not played it, very positive reviews so far though and I enjoyed the hell out of the first.
Dead Space
Halo 3
Burnout Paradise
Project Gotham Racing 4
Would love to link to reviews and such, but I'm at work and don't have much time - just check www.gamerankings.com for review lists and www.gametrailers.com for some of the best reviews on the net. Avoid the Gametrailers Forum like the plague though.

Crackdown
You already played Mass Effect
Braid
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
And definitely play the Mirror's Edge demo.
Earth Defense Force 2017 (Great all-around fun game, good for blowing crap up, but also a good challenge)
Pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum, but both are what I'd consider must-have 360 titles. I don't see them come up often as recommendations, either, so I always like to throw them out there.
Dead Space, Rainbow Six Vegas and Vegas 2 are all good choices if you haven't played them on another system.

Another would be The Orange Box, by now considering you could get it used it could be the best $40 bucks you'll ever spend. You get Half-life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-life 2: Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 as well as Portal. Right there you get a big game to play through with Half-life 2 including the episodes, it's a fun single player experience which I've repeated a time or two, Team Fortress 2 is one of the multiplayer games that I enjoy the most, and Portal is an awesome First Person Puzzle Game.
Grand Theft Auto IV, definitely a fun joy ride and a must have for fans of the older games, and even enjoyable for those new to the series. I'll say this I've been a fan of all of the 3D GTAs and this is the first one where I actually completed the story, and it is a good story at that.
Assassin's Creed is an interesting game, though if you dislike too much repetition it may not be for you, but the way you just go flying through the various old world cities, leaping from building to building in very cinematic ways can be awesome all on it's own, not to mention bringing death from above with a stealth kill.
Crackdown, someone else suggested this but let me describe it a bit. Take a GTA game... but make the protagonist this super human badass that can barely be stopped. Seeing yourself become stronger, faster and more skilled with weapons and driving is very fun. Leaping several blocks by the time you've got your agility maxed out. Not to mention, with a good enough driving skill... you can drive up a building with a big ass humvee/van.
Fable 2, what can I say I'm a fan of the original and I love this thing to death. They took the original, they for the most part made the sequal what they promised the original to be and then added more. If you liked the original, or like third person action RPGs in general, pick this up.
There are some others I could recommend but that's a lot right there, also keep in mind the XBLA which has many good games though they will require you to purchase Microsoft Points.
Yep, time for me to update that thing
edit: updated

Castle Crashers, Braid, and Megaman 9 are all short, but awesome games. I've heard good things about the Penny Arcade RPG episodes as well. Then you have games like Pac-Man: Championship Edition, N+, and Geometry Wars 2 that are awesome pick up and play games: great for a few minutes or you could end up playing them for hours trying to improve your skills & your score. And definitely pick up Portal if you haven't played it before.
For retail games, the Gears of War games have short but very well done campaign modes (available in both 1-player or 2-player co-op). Bioshock is a bit longer (about 20 hours I'd guess) and if you haven't played it already on the PC, you really need to check it out; one of the best games I've played in a long time. Dead Rising & Crackdown are other short, but fun games with a good amount of replay value that can be acquired for cheaply these days.
If you like JRPGs and don't mind a time investment, Blue Dragon is awesome and Tales of Vesperia is supposedly awesome (I haven't played it personally, but I've heard good things). Lost Odyssey & Infinite Undiscovery are also good and we've got The Last Remnant coming out later this month which looks promising (Square-Enix RPG).

After checking out the GoW2 trailer on gametrailers, I can pretty much add that to my list.
Dead space looks awesome too, how the fuck did I not have an interest in this game from before. I may also get Fallout 3 for my PC, as you suggested, mr. Laka, but that might have to wait.
Ghost Recon looks awesome after reviewing the video on gametrailers, but how is the AI? I don't have a good reason, but I seem to not trust the GT reviewer.
--As I had written this, and researched most of the games of the first four posts, I refreshed to fing plenty more, so, as my time right now is limited, I will restrain myself to shorter remarks about each game. I would like to thank all of you for taking the moment to think about this, and giving me your recommendations. Also, thanks for the link to slashsignal. And I guess thanks for writing it, Mr. 000.--
Bioshock - almost forgot about this game. I have heard pretty much only good things, so it is a definite possibility.
Lost Oddysey - Amagad, purdy. I want it. Give me it.
Fable 2 - Love the art-style. Do want. Also love choose your own adventure style. Too bad it all ends the same.
Rainbow 6 Vegas - Does it have co-op? 'cause I think I tried it on a friends PSTriple, and really liked the co-op.
Crackdown - Supercop? sign me up.
XBLA - brings me onto a question: do I need to paya monthly fee to play, say, GoW2 online? or is it for access to the store? I don't quite get it.
Will have to get Castle Crashers. Two of my friends made most of the music for that game, and would never forgive me if I didn't have it. Come to think of it, I might get it for free through them, seeings as how none of them has a 360 to play it on.
Also, forgot to mention. Have TOB on PC. Lots of fun has been had.
Need to get to bed, as it is 04.14 here in Norway, and I'm constantly fearful the polarbears will see the light in my window. They never sleep. Will check back in the morrow.
Thanks again.

Up to 4 player co-op for the first game, and 2 player co-op for the second. It's a good co-op game, but once the campaign's over, it's over, so not like the SWAT series, where you can play various stand-alone instances.

Ka-Chung!
I got bioshock, mass effect, and gears of war for about that much used on one of the buy two get one free weekends at ebstop.
Also, I've already beat Mass Effect on my PC.
Ed: Should I get the Pro or the Elite?
Call of Duty 4 multiplayer
Bioshock
Pacman: CE
If you have gamer friends close by, Rock Band.
If you have a buddy to play online coop with, Gears of War or Halo 3 campaign.
Some other random suggestions include Condemned (and the sequel), Braid, Lumines, Ninja Gaiden: Black (xbox original). I'm only around 5 hours into Fallout 3, but it is good so far.
To counter something said above - no Netflix outside of the USA.
I'd go with the Pro. The 60 gig space should be more than enough for the small amount of time you'll be playing it.
Going into the army eh? Forget the Halo and Gars of War kiddie stuff and go with Resistance 1 and 2. Better games all the way around, and 2 comes out today! Still with the military theme...how about Metal Gear Solid 4...you ain't getting quality and story like that on the XBOX360. You can still get Bioshock and Mercs 2 for the PS3..awesome game. And if you liked Oblivion, you are going to love Fallout 3...my vote for Game of the Year!
So forget the XBOX, cause with only so many days left to play before you leave...if you Red Ring of Death ( which mine did, and I also got screwed over by customer support over MS points), you will be left with nothing left to play. With the PS3, you get a solid machine, a blu-ray player and an awesome gaming machine.

And lessthan12parsecs is a giant douche it seems, both system (obviously) have their merits and flaws.
Wow what a troll. Even though I do think the ps3 is a better value because of the bluray and media functions, for people who just care about games the 360 is the winner. I don't think you can go wrong either way.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
He said he wants to have an awesome time gaming, not watching a bad movie.
To the OP: Get Castle Crashers, Geo Wars 2 and Earth Defense Force 2017.
PSN: GetMediaeval
Oh my god. I think you mistook Penny Arcade for the Gametrailers forum.

After my dealings with MS and the 360 ( I was locked out of my account for about 2 weeks and told it was my fault, all because I spent money with them and then I got the RRoD) I decided I should go the PS3 route. Glad I did and I am not missing the 360, but I will let folks know why they should choose the red headed stepchild on these boards.
Here is what I should have done instead of telling this guy he has a choice, I guess that makes people nervous around here...
To the OP: Whatever you get, enjoy it. Hope your military life is long and epic win. Stay frosty out there.
lessthan12parsecs
This is the best thing ever.
Gotta read through this.
I thought it was a good movie... :P
I heard you're retarded enough to come in a 360 recommendations thread preaching about the PS3. Just a rumour though.
Also you don't need to sign your posts.
1) You heard wrong
2) No one called you a douche, it's all in your head and no one is out to get you.
3) If you want to rave and rant about your problems with another console, we do have threads here about problems with the Xbox 360
4) Most people here are multiplatform gamers, only Neogaf and Gametrailers jack off about X,Y,Z console brand.
5) Entering a thread and going off about a console in a thread that has nothing to do with personal choice in consoles and turning into something other than the original question is kind of selfish. Seriously, I wonder what goes through people's minds while they do this.
6) We get it, you want your username to be known. No need to sign every post.
Tumblr
$60? Fuck that noise... unless you're going to be playing a specific game online alot or replaying it constantly.
There's no need to buy, especially considering the fact that you can now rent games and keep them for a while, without a fine (after 2 weeks they charge you but you can return the game within 30(maybe 90) days and get all the money back).
1) whatever, I know what I heard.
2) read the posts before you state something..just look back a few posts
3) Ranting and raving=one tiny paragraph. I am sure you can make a list on how I should do go about this in the future.
4) Didn't know those were the only two boards where you could state your opinions freely, I 'll have to look into that.
5) I am sure this has NEVER happened on these boards. So, do you go around and police all the boards and make sure this doesn't happen
6) ring ring...hello, kettle?...this is the pot...you are black. Thanks for the advice Tokyo Funk, I will take that into consideration when I finish this post.
Again, sorry I came in with an opinion other than that of XBOXFanbois. I forgot how close minded the Microsoft masses can be. Thought today was supposed to be a day of change...from what I have seen and heard about these boards...not around here.
lessthan12parsecs ( didn't take your oh so great advice Tokyo Funk)
Wow what a way to be a total dick. And this is coming from a guy that only owns a ps3 and doesn't have a 360.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
