I need to build a CHEAP machine...

Ok, I need to build my dad a cheap tower, as he was about to throw way too much money at a guy for a used P3 system. It's for a 65+ year old man, so I don't need to get the Nvidia GeForce 9999+ in it and whatnot, just need some parts. I haven't built a system since my last gaming rig (April 05) so I'm a little out of date. I figure you all could do it a lot faster than I could research and figure it out.

I already have a hard drive, NIC and dvd burner. No other drives are needed. Just the mobo, cpu, case, RAM, PSU and that's it. Video and sound can all be on board.

Thanks in advance, guys.

    2$

    Really though...

Check out newegg.com for some deals on barebones kits. They have some badass deals there a lot of the time. You can get a machine going for dirt cheap just shopping on daily deals.

Pop in a $20 stick of ram, a $20 DVD drive, and even a $40 HDD -- all of which are under recommended. I'm a little partial to these small PCs, so you can probably find even better.

My cheap is somewhere around $200-250. Sorry, should have clarified that.

Dude, he's getting a Dell. Specifically, an off-lease or open-box deal at Dell Outlet - there's a 25%-off coupon floating around that should net you an entire machine for less than that; and it'll come with a legit copy of Windows.

Going to agree with this. I am all for building your own machine, but it can get tough to save money when you are getting to such a low price range, especially when you consider that Windows costs the same no matter what the cost your machine. Retailers can get away with dirt cheap deals, keep an eye out for that.

I already have Windows XP Pro. I got a copy from the school for $10, and it's good for two installs (used it on his laptop).
