Game looks to be shaping up nicely, the section on diplomacy in particular makes me excited. My biggest problem with most turn based games is the terribad diplomacy.
There is something to be said for clean and simple. If you have a good conceptual design you can do wonders without crazy complex graphics. What I'm seeing so far is a good start towards that, it just lacks a little bit of originality it'd need to go from simple and generic to simple yet good.

We've seen very little of the game too. We have no idea what all of the many factions will look like. That's what can make or break the atmosphere.

What's wrong with you people? I swear, you'd not play chess because the graphics weren't fresh enough. I wouldn't care if the sequel was entirely "rendered" by Thai 5 year olds wielding a crayola set in 12 hour workshifts, if the mechanics are solid and enjoyable then this game is worth twice the price.
I bet you guys don't even play master of magic any more.
Chess has excellent graphics. Clean, crisp, with iconic and easy to recognize pieces. You show me a chess piece and I know immediately it's function and designation.
Compare this to checkers, which while being a good game in it's own right, lacks the striking physical representation of chess. Checkers has poor graphics and yes, I think less of the game because of it. Doesn't mean I won't play and enjoy checkers, I would just like it more if it had more stand out art.
Mechanics come first of course, a bad game is a bad game no matter how pretty, but there is a base line that has to be met for a game to be considered top shelf in the modern gaming market. Noone claims all games have to be stunning, but if you have mid range graphics you should stick to the flash game market, which has different standards.
The screen shots so far are right at the base of what I consider to be top shelf, and ideally I'd like to see them take that graphics engine which seems solid enough, and push the art direction a little bit so that it's a bit less generic. I'm sure they will, I mean they have plenty of time to develop art assets.
I see your chess/checkers analogy and raise you a goban. A game with multiple times the strategic depth of chess, but with the simple representation of just black/white stones and a grid. It has relatively simple basic rules, but there's no Deep blue able to 'solve' it.
If there's any kind of gamer that wouldn't mind simple markers for graphics, it's the hardcore PC sim players which would remember MoM fondly

It's the abstraction of elements that I'm arguing against specifically. I don't want a game that is marketed towards statisticians. No matter the technical quality a game that resembles a string of binary code isn't going to be as enjoyable for me as one that can provide immersive gameplay and allow emotional investment in the individual elements.

What if it resembled a string of binary code but you had to put your penis in a device and if you lost it chopped it off? That would add plenty of emotional investment I would think.
I don't know where I'm going with this.

With all this MoM talk (hehe) I think I will load up Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic again.
I would load up MoM, but alas my copy has vanished from the material plane.

Seriously, they could just reskin master of magic and I'd probably pay 50 bucks for it - that game fucking ruled. I'll have to keep an eye on this, if they do good maybe they can make a MoO3 game that doesn't suck ass.

Oh yeah, I don't have a problem with their beta plan, giving us partial access to the game as we go along works great by allowing testers to both familiarise ourselves and focus on the important parts rather then the ones we like. It was never intended to be a "fun" beta, its a raw effort at making the game better.

Perhaps they should have gone with the title: "Master of Allusion"?

People complaining about the graphics are crazy. I've never played a MoM game but after investigating this thread on a whim I became interested because of the simple charm of the graphics.
Just a heads up, last chance if you want to get the beta:
By Frogboy Posted September 6, 2009 14:59:26
We’re on the last day of PAX. If you want to get into the beta, you can still do so by pre-ordering it. After the beta goes out, the beta will be closed to new users until next year.
Note: The beta will NOT be fun. These are real betas. The game mechanics are only partially implemented and subject to radical change based on player suggestions.
^ That's pretty cool. It's a chance for the players to influence the outcome of the game. A lot of the beta's I've seen usually happen at a very late stage, where all they're doing is fine tuning balance.
Revive the thread! According to the developer website, a beta for this should be coming in approximately sixty days, which you can supposedly get into by pre-ordering. Sounds like good times to me.
Ok, so I'm only a minute into this video and I'm already sold. I mean, I was already mostly sold before because Master of Magic but as soon as I saw the zoom scaling ala Sins in motion my jaw hit the floor. I will play this game for fucking months, then play another game for a couple days and go right back to this one.
it'll be available on or before [September] 21st. Also, we're planning on sending emails out to notify those who pre-order when the beta's officially available (as well as massive announcements here on the forums).
Just for clarification they seem to be defining end of summer as "it'll be available on or before [September] 21st. Also, we're planning on sending emails out to notify those who pre-order when the beta's officially available (as well as massive announcements here on the forums)."
And you must pre-order directly from Stardock to get into the beta.
Whoa hold on, you work for Stardock? Never knew that.
Also, if I don't pre-order until sometime after the beta starts, can I still get in?

No, I don't work at Stardock. I was lazy and used quotation marks instead the quote tags. Sorry if my post made it seem like I was actually saying stuff rather than quoting posts made by Stardock employees. I'll fix that in a few minutes.
For those who pre ordered, beta codes are being emailed out right now. People on the elemental forum have been receiving them for the last hour or three.
We need more than that! This is the first non-Blizzard PC game I've really been following in a long time. Poor TBS.

The idea that your vote is a moral statement about you or who you vote for is some backwards ass libertarian nonsense. Your vote is about society. Vote to protect the vulnerable.

Well I only had time to play for about 20 min before I had to head out the door tonight. A Lot of options are not enabled right now. Some of the highlights are random enemies on the world map seam to spawn from lairs that you can conquer, a build your own units like Gal Civ 2 and random events spawned in the world.

It's kind of a smart move really, having people playtest the gameplay only, while you can continue to work on the 3D representation.
Still, I know what you mean. They said the game was delayed due to shipping people over to Demigod, but it seems further delays have crept in.

Edit: Woo, can't find the email but I *did* find my printout of the order page. So that's good.
I completely missed this thread when it was made and wasn't looking at the post dates. So in my head I was thikning "Oh god damnit, 14 months? Fuck!"
I'm really happy I missed this thread the first time around

To your other question
Quick! Everyone mob him with beta invite requests!
I've been meaning to check Impulse out too, so this is a good thing.
