UK wrote:
The top 3 games in the All Formats Chart remain the same for a second week as Lucasarts’ ‘Star Wars: The Force Unleashed’ holds on to No1 despite a 38% drop in sales.

Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit’ at No2 is continuing to shape up nicely, registering its 3rd largest sales week ever with a 75% rise in sales, while ‘Mario Kart Wii’ is a non-mover at No3 (sales up 26%). Ubisoft’s ‘Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway’ enters the battlefield at No4, only 2,250 sales behind Nintendo (65% of sales on Xbox 360, 35% on PS3), while Disney Interactive Studios has this weeks only other All Formats Top 10 new entry with ‘Pure’ at No8. This week last year there were 4 All Formats Top 10 new entries, including ‘Halo 3’ at No1 and ‘FIFA 08’ at No2. EA only have one Top 10 game this week with ‘Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09’ down one place at No5, as ‘Mercenaries 2: World in Flames’ drops from No6 to No11, however ‘FIFA 09’ should kick start things for the big US publisher when it is launched next week. The ‘Wii Fit’ influenced game ‘Family Trainer’ from Namco-Bandai/Atari debuts at No20, proving that even with renewed stock of the Nintendo original, there is a market for similar fitness titles on Wii.

Ok, last post on this, since I think I've made all the points I want to here.
Let's take a look at Mr Hatsworth:

Ok, so he has a bowler hat, a monocle, an umbrella and a moustache. That's a typical list of eccentric british stereotypes. I'm only surprised he isn't smoking a pipe.
The thing is, though, that all of those are window-dressing. Strip those away and his face is expressionless. Lifeless. Nothing to it at all. He's a waxwork covered in stereotypical quirks and trademarks, not a character.

Are you saying that you object to using visual cues to quickly relay to the viewer/player what kind of character they'll be dealing with?

And just how much personality should a static picture present anyway? Thank god all this can be determined by a picture and a game description without knowing exactly how the game presents this in a working environment!

Your attempts at quirkiness are laboured, rendering this thread bland and generic.

In other news, is it tonight that Gears of War 2 launches? I've hardly seen much advertising for it or anything. There's been some stuff in the thread and plenty of promotional videos flying around, but it doesn't feel like there's much hype coming from MS (that I've been witness to).
I believe I'm horribly wrong on this.

edit: WHOAH, here's something. The Joker's fatality (where he shoots the dude in the head) that was cut from MK vs DC? It's still in the game in Europe.
Europe is the one that hates violence in games, loves boobs. Reverse that for the US.

Bob's your uncle, I daresay you're correct on the lack of Gears 2 advertising, gov'na.

    (I promise I'll stop now)

Actually, I really haven't seen much marketing for Gears. Then again, the Halo 3 blitz kind of bit them in the ass when they made too many cat helmet editions/mold green consoles, and when they flooded the market for the launch then didn't have enough left in reserve for Christmas. Maybe they figure the game will more or less sell itself, which may be the truth.

Edit: Wait, Joker's fatality is intact? As in, you still see his target get shot in the face? (In the edit he still shoots, it just pulls away from his victim.) That's... odd.

Edit 2: Huh, Kotaku says you're right. Looks like Europe's ratings system is a little more flexible than hours. Maybe we need something between Teen and M.

edit: WHOAH, here's something. The Joker's fatality (where he shoots the dude in the head) that was cut from MK vs DC? It's still in the game in Europe.
Europe is the one that hates violence in games, loves boobs. Reverse that for the US.

    Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

They needed to get a teen rating in the US for the DC licencing.

Yeah, I'm expecting it to pull in some good numbers. It's not a UT3 case where nobody realised it was out until a week after it launched, but it seems more low-key than I expected.

Are you saying that you object to using visual cues to quickly relay to the viewer/player what kind of character they'll be dealing with?
No, I'm saying he's nothing but visual cues.
He could use some of the originality that the actual game concept seems to have.

It's because the US has a single 'teen' rating, which starts from 13. Here in Europe we've got more flexibility, so they could still fit it into the target market but with a higher level of violence.

Actually, in Europe there's a 13 rating and a 15 rating before you get to the highest rating. DC apparently okayed the 15 rating, which allows the Dick Cheney shot. But in the U.S., there's only one "Teen" between kid-friendly and mature. Apparently the bar for T is set low enough to where the shot wasn't kosher.

Like I said, it seems this just shows Europe's ratings system is a bit more flexible.

    EA realizes the fucking obvious.
    http://www.casualgaming.biz/news/27900/Vrabreck-resigns-from-EA-Casual
The head of EA’s Casual Entertainment Division, Kathy Vrabeck, has resigned from the company after 18 months in charge. In addition, EA CEO John Riccitiello has told employees that the firm’s Casual label will now be merged with its The Sims label, which is to be headed up by former Everquest head Rod Humble.

GameDaily reports that 17 year EA veteran Chip Lange has also been appointed with the task of overseeing the publisher’s relationship with toy and board games powerhouse Hasbro, as well as heading up EA’s Bright Light Studio. Harvey Elliot and Scott Walker will join Lange’s team, with former Casual label number two Russell Arons heading up marketing for the new division.

An EA spokesperson told GameDaily: “We've learned a lot about casual entertainment in the past two years, and found that casual gaming defies a single genre and demographic. With Kathy's departure, EA is reorganising to integrate casual games (development and marketing) into other divisions of our business.

“We are merging our Casual Studios, Hasbro partnership, and casual marketing organization with The Sims label to be a new Sims and Casual label, where there is a deep compatibility in the product design, marketing and demographics.”

Vrabeck, who also headed up EA’s online casual games portal Pogo.com, has left to seek new opportunities outside of the publisher.

Not sure I understand you completely. After all, we just had a bunch of quarterly statements from a slew of companies (MS, Nintendo, EA, Activision, etc.), with lots of interesting data.

Per title sales data is slow but that's to be expected ... the holiday season is just starting. It will probably be a while before we get a really clear picture of how all of the titles sold. Well, certainly we'll get press releases for the big titles that do massive amount of day-one pre-orders/sales (like Fallout 3).

TFU has some terrible glitches and the speed of the combat doesn't mesh with the fact that you are supposedly slashing at people with a OHKO death laser stick.

Game needed better QA and more decapitations. NMH has some of the same problems but is still the better Star Wars game despite having nothing to do with Star Wars.

So does the phrase "barrier to entry" mean something different in the UK than the US? If not perhaps some short selling of Sega stock is in order.

Here's an interview with Sega A&R's head of content, Darren Williams.

Overall it seems pretty confused, especially about the Wii.

I come bearing sales figures for the dark continent of Europe.
    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/nintendo-unveils-2008-european-console-sales-figures
Nintendo has released the 2008 sales figures for handheld and home consoles in Europe during its financial results briefing.

The Wii was revealed as the top seller, shifting over 10.4 million units in the region, followed by Sony's PlayStation 3 and, in last place, Microsoft's Xbox 360. The Wii hit its peak in April with nearly 180,000 units sold, compared to its rivals sales of around 90,000 each.

However, the data did suggest that the recent price cut on the Xbox 360 improved sales, with Microsoft selling over 60,000 units in October, topping the PS3.

Nintendo led the race in handhelds sales too, revealing data that showed the DS took a significant lead over the PlayStation Portable for the entirety of the year, peaking in July with around 225,000 unit sales compared to the PSP's peak of just over 50,000 units during the same period.

It's really not a bad game per se, but Psi Ops beat TFU to the punch, and did it better.

That's not to say you can't enjoy both games (you certainly can!), or that the fact that Psi Ops is a lot better makes TFU a bad game (it doesn't). I found TFU enjoyable, but also that I feel like TFU didn't live up to its potential, since I constantly had the feeling that Psi Ops did was TFU set out to do, and did it better.

So speaking of bad games, there really seems to be a lack of them this holiday season. I mentioned this a few weeks ago, how all of the big releases seem to be faring well, at least review wise. A few more games have come out, and again, the scores are positive: Fable II, Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Gears 2, and even the new Banjo Kazooie game. There's nothing like the Hellgate: London fiasco of last year. Or Assassin's Creed, which had very mixed opinions. At least not yet ...

What's left for this season? There's the new WoW expansion, COD : WaW, and Mirror's Edge. Anything else?

It'll be interesting to see come January how the sales figures all line up. Was it worth it for companies to spend the extra time and effort to make these games really shine? One would hope so, since I want to see good games be rewarded with great sales ...
