Computer won't shut off

Not a very complex problem. I'm using vista, and whenever I tell my computer to shut down, it will go through the normal routine, and then the OS will shut down. The screen goes black, everything. But the tower itself still runs; to shut it off I need to hold the power button for a few seconds to cut the power. I know it's not meant to be this way, since sometimes it shuts down all the way with no extra steps. Any ideas on how to make it shut down normally?

Are you hitting the power Icon on the start menu? Because that is a S3 sleep (or just plain sleep) your machines bios might be set for only S1 sleep (most retail motherboards this can be changed), or correct/updated drivers need to be loaded. If you are going through the shutdown option then you might want to update the Motherboard driver and or Bios. If that doesn't correct it try install SP1 (even if you are running SP1).

is it just the fans continuing to run for a while?

some newer power supplies keep the fans running for a few mins after a system is shut down in order to make sure everything remains cool and you don't get any heat damage from having fans just suddenly stop while components are still hot.

try waiting 5-10mins after a shutdown and see if it's still going. if it's still going than you know that there really is something wrong.

Topweasel: No, I go in and hit the shutdown option. I'll look into checking the motherboard driver.

Foomy: I've tried leaving it on like that before, but it still runs indefinitely.

    Those damn ghosts!

It's not home built. I got it from alienware, and it's still in warranty. Is this something I should look into repairs for? I always just figured it was some minor hitch with the OS.

Also, how do I go about checking the drivers for my motherboard?

It probably is. Reapplying SP1 for Vista might help at least when I have seen the same action on XP.
