My roommate and I just purchased a new LCD TV, and my roommate, long story short, accidentally made an eighth-of-an-inch scratch in the display. Now we COULD try and returning it and saying it came with the scratch but that's A. Dishonest and B. A big hassle.
Is there anyway to lessen the appearance of a scratch on the screen? I not hoping for a complete fix, but right now the scratch is white and obscures the pixels behind it (also is highly noticeable when the screen is dark (whether in black or turned off).
EDIT: It's a "JVC 42" LCD HDTV with TeleDock iPod Docking Station" if that matters at all.
What type of warranty or return policy does the store have? They might accept a return regardless.
Again, it would be a big hassle as neither myself nor my roommate own vehicles, so we'd need to enlist a friend or family member, on top of packing that thing up again and lugging it back to the store. A big hassle I wouldn't mind avoiding if there was an easy way to take out the scratch, or lessen it's appearance.
EDIT: ON closer inspection, it appears that it's actually a pretty deep gouge and I think it damaged the screen below it. Great.
There was a bunch of junk on one of the couches from unloading the TV and the new xbox hdmi cables, so he was clearing stuff off and was holding the xbox audio adapter cable thingy (we weren't using it in the setup), and while holding that in this hand, he grabbed his hat and flung it to the other side of the room to get it out of the way. He lost grip of the cable and it slammed into the TV.
Basically, he was careless and was tossing shit around next to our new fucking TV. Though I guess to be fair, he really couldn't have known that would happen.
Is this a scratch or a scuffed on layer of plastic from the xbox audio adapter cable thingy?
You might be able to clean it off...100% isopropyl alcohol could'nt hurt the screen, but it could remove the mark.
If it is actually a scratch, this website suggests you can fix it with petroleum jelly.
edit: Disregard the first part, I just saw your edit. If it's really all the way through the outer plastic then you probably shouldn't try that link either.

Yeah,
Also it turns out that it probably wasn't my roommates fault.. He said it hit the other side of the screen and it turns out there's a little scuffing there. So either it's a huge cover-up on his part, or we did get a lemon. Which made the return process nice.

How?

He gets to deal with the return though.
