AIM problems

Ok, I just downloaded the newest AIM and Im having a weird problem. On my screen what AIM calls 12 point font is actually closer to like 18 or 20, and what they call 8 is about what 12 is on mine. But it transmits out as real 8pt, as in my friends can hardly read it.

See the big text there is my friends set at 12, and thats mine set at 8. I can't seem to figure out whats going on, its really weird. My buddy list seems to work fine, its set at 12 and it looks like 12 to me.

Im running Windows 2000 but AIM said it would work on 98 and the buddy list works fine. Im kinda lost and confused at the moment.

Yes, do your self a favor and use an alternate client. I love Miranda, it is hugely customizable, bu it takes quite a bit of work to get it to look nice.
Pidgin is a pretty good and straight forward client.

I <3 Cake Wrecks. I have a Mac so I just use iChat. Until you figure it out or start using something new Meebo can hold you over.

Looks like a bolded size 12 font to me.

Your friend is running like insano resolutions probably on a huge monitor. I've noticed AIM does that sometimes.

Your best bet is to get, like everyone else recommended, a multi-IM client and then go at it. Make sure to disable font effects and then everyone shows up as whatever on your end.

Also I think in AIM there's an option to change that very same thing for incoming, so to make it readable and not red on black text like everyone used to do back in the day.

You could also try Trillian. I've been using that for years and have been quite happy with it.

I'm going to add a third vote for Pidgin. I've had no problems with it, its nice and light. I have less problems with it than friends who use AIM tend to have.
I've also heard interesting things about Digsby but I've not used it myself to know if it's any good (or compatible with your windows.) But you can skin it, which is always a bonus.

Yeah, the old like aim95 is good too. They just get out of hand with new stuff and bloat it with features. All we want is a window with 2 boxes that talk to eachother.

After reading this, it got me thinking. Is this just happening when talking to one friend or is it happening with everyone? I'm also gonna have to go along with everyone else and suggest you dump that piece of shit and use an alternate client. I'm not even going to say what i use because i don't think this thread needs to turn into yet another my AIM client is better then your AIM client thread.

That's why gAIM was so great, it emulated that motherfucker with MSN and yahoo to boot. I remember the old Unix client AOL put out, that was grand.
