Find some extra income

Here's the scoop, I have to move soon, and I'm not going to find a place for close to what I'm paying for my basement suite that isn't in one of the complete shit-hole areas of town.

I don't REALLY want to move into another basement suite, the only reason I live in this one is because I'm friends with the people upstairs.

I now pay $500/mo for this place, and can afford up to $650/mo, most decent-ish places around here range from $650 to $900 a month. This isn't even a large town with a high income rate, so I don't know how it justifies the high cost of living, but whatever.

If the cost of rent alone was the issue I wouldn't be that concerned, but I REALLY need to get a car; so tack on the cost of a car and I'm basically consuming 100% of my net income.

I'm wondering what I can do to rake in some extra cash, ideally $300+

Here are the specific details on what does/doesn't help me in this goal:
  • Arrive back in town around 6:45-7:00pm
  • Go to bed around 10:30-11:00pm to wake at 6:30am
  • Weekends Off
  • Skilled programmer in a number of areas
  • (probably obvious but) Skilled with computers

Anybody have any ideas?

Do not feel trapped by the need to achieve anything, this way you achieve everything.

Oh, hey I'm making a game! Check it out: Dr. Weirdo!

Blood Giving, Sperm giving, drug testing. But you might cap at like $200. But it leaves a lot of time for other jobs.

Are you a college student, going to class while working? The reason I ask is that a skilled programmer should be able to make a grand or two a month easy (post tax). Most Full Time programming jobs should pay more then that though.

Failing that you could fix people's PCs on the side. Depending on the area and your skillset you can charge between $35 and $90 an hour. The only downside to this, is that it's not "reliable" work. Sometimes you'll book 10 hours one week and the next you won't have any. So, I would personally think that is a bit risky if you have to make rent every month (unless you stock it away and save it in the chance you have a down month).

Mowing lawns and shoving snow can pay 5 to 10 an hour. Again, this like computers - some months you get lots of work, others not much at all.

Part time job? If you need $300 a month, say at $10 an hour that is 30 hours before tax. Depending on your tax bracket, you could do 40-55 hours extra a month. 30 hours divide by 4 weeks is 7.5 hours a week or 1.5 hours per weekday.

In my area, Colorado, they pay for plasma donations. You can donate once a week at I believe 30 dollars a pop. You'll be helping someone else and making money. Look into it.

Grocery stores, either cashier or stockboy. Home Depot/Ace or any hardware store.
Stores around this time are hiring for Christmas sales, a few extra bucks there. Especially weekend work.

If you need a new car, you could just buy the car and deliver pizzas, which are fairly resilient to the economy as it's a cheap comfort food for a family compared to eating out at a restaurant. That alone will pay for the car payment each month; you would just have to worry about the extra mileage you are putting on the car, which wouldn't be a problem if you buy it with low mileage. You wouldn't get the weekend shift more than likely as a rookie, but you could do that for 3 hours a night during the week.

Freelance programmers to write tools and scripts are needed in many areas. Try craigslist.

Also, look into where you can save money. If you're buying even a third of your meals, stop. Save something like that for the occasional luxury and make your own stuff. Also, consider getting a nice place but with a room mate.
