Song of Ice and Fire HBO TV series picked up, premieres next Spring!
UPDATE: HBO HAS GREENLIT THE SERIES. IT'S COMIN', BABY!
Figured I'd update the first post. Sean Bean has been cast as Eddard Stark in the pilot for AGOT. It's old news now, but Peter Dinklage has been cast as Tyrion.
Other actors signed on for the pilot were Kit Harington in the role of Jon Snow, Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon, Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon, and Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen.
They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.
It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.
It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.
More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.
A Feast for Crows can be a chore, but the first three books, once you step a bit into the first one and get into the meat, are an absolute delight. Just take a rainy day, cook up some tea (or a delicious warm cup of flat Dr. Pepper, whatever floats your boat) and read a bit of the first.
I really hope it's being put in the right hands, the series has some amazing possibilities if the script is realized correctly. Definitely be adding HBO back to my cable if this actually gets started.
Casting the kids is going to be tough. I mean, it always is, but they're going to need a lot of young actors, and some good ones, too.
I may be mistaken, but I have a vague recollection of G.R.R.M saying somewhere that in hindsight, it would have been better to make all the kids a couple of years older and that this might be done in the tv adaptation.
HBO needs to fill the void left by The Wire (and earlier by The Sopranos)
Right now the best show still producing is Entourage. Which has basically been the HBO version of Friends. (It's a great show but not much of a flagship)
They need to get something going that will last more than a few seasons. I can't bring myself to read Fantasy (With the exception of Tolkien's better known stuff) but this looks like something I could enjoy.
This is awesome. There isn't much that they already did in Rome that can't be done here as well (underage sex will have to go, I'm sure), and I was a huge fan of that show. Presumably they'll have to make the children older, which I'm definitely okay with. I'm wondering how they'll handle the scale of the thing, though. I'm hoping they'll utilize matte paintings and renderings moreso than they did in Rome, which at times really just looked like a bunch of sets strung together. The budget for that show was far too large, though, so they'll have to be smart about it.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.

Also: James Callis for Littlefinger.
Yeah, GRRM said somewhere that it would've been better to make them older. Mostly cause he planned to have a large gap of years between the first three and second three books so they could grow up a bit... but that couldn't really happen seeing how things turned out.
yeah, their best bet would to be making the kids older and getting young-looking adult actors
otherwise there's no way they can do it.
I read the first two books the other week, and loved them, but seriously. all the juvenile characters were written way too old. It was like the author had never spent more than five minutes with anyone under 25...
This could get me to subscribe to HBO. I still have time to finish A Feast of Crows...I think I stopped about a quarter of the way through when it started dragging. Don't fuck this up HBO.
Take a look at George R.R Martin and tell me you would let him spend time with your children.
And if we're going to play fantasy casting
Jamie Lannister= Charlie hunnam
Tyrion Lannister= Peter Dinklage
These are both sound choices. In fact I would bet on Peter Dinklage being cast as Tyrion, he's pretty much ideal for the part.
I AM SO STOKED ABOUT THIS.

This is going to be so terrible. I enjoyed the first couple of books but then he went off into his whole George RR Martin as dwarf fantasy thing. Also, man the sex scenes are just terrible and unnecessary.
He won't even have the Galactica conflict since they'll be done filming BSG by the time HBO makes the yea/nay call on this and Littlefinger doesn't appear until King's Landing

Why do you always hate good things Dyna? Every time.

Seriously I will be surprised if the pilot doesn't win through. The only issue could be production costs (like what happened to Rome)
Rome looked like one of their cheaper shows. Seriously they really skimped on it. And the battle scenes were terrible. It was not up to HBO's usual standards at all.

Is this like a hilarious joke?
The first season (12 episodes) cost $100 million dollars to make. It is their most expensive show to date, I believe.

They must have used it on the casts and the extras then. The sets were ass. Maybe they were riding around on thoroughbreds. I dunno.
I hear there was alot of inefficiency in the way Rome was shot though. Problems with the producer and etc. Things like trashing sets they needed later and shooting in an improper order.
Honestly this isn't terrible difficult if you don't have your head up your ass.
Any guesses on shooting location?
Canada? (Probably my guess)
also calling the sex in ASOIAF gratuitous is pretty knee-jerk: considering the way that each character handles sexuality is absolutely essential to their character

I thought it looked great. It remains one of my favourite shows and is one of the main reasons I have high hopes for THRONES

I don't think HBO's pilots are handled the same way as network channels.
Pretty much my reaction when I saw this a few minutes ago on his blog.
secondly, listen hear grrm, you just put your face in your keyboard and FINISH MY BOOK!!!!!!
(I am so looking forward to this pilot. This is the only shit that will make me order HBO)

There's also Tyrion to consider...
I have very high hopes for this series, given how good Rome was and how similar it is in tone to Asoiaf I think we may be on to a winner here.
So how much content do you think they will fit into the pilot?
I have a feeling that the episode will end as

Yess.....

That's the perfect place to end the pilot. Also, that's where the series had me hooked .

YES
YES
A THOUSAND TIMES YES

@Sal: Was Callis the lawyer on BSG?
Callis is Baltar, although the dude who played Romo Lampkin would also do a good job.
Seriously I will be surprised if the pilot doesn't win through. The only issue could be production costs (like what happened to Rome)
I enjoy the books but not the terrible aspects of them

Could this be the reason for the stalls in Dance?
Maybe the publisher is holding over for the series to start so they can jump up book sales?

I can't think of anything in Asoiaf that was terrible.
There were a few scenes which were unneccesary, perhaps at worst a little gratuitous, but a good scriptwriter will trim those out anyway.
Honestly this isn't terrible difficult if you don't have your head up your ass.

for Rome? It was shot in Italy.
