Birthday Game thread!

Ok guys I'm strapped for time and need some quick help.

My wife is getting me a game for my birthday tonight, I need to pick a game, but I don't have alot of time to research everything.

Game can be PC or XBOX 360.

I'm going to borrow fallout 3 so thats off the list.

I like FPS games, and RPGS mostly.

Roughly thinking of Gears 2, but also heard that CoD5 came out, and I've liked and played the l4d demo.

Worried that Gears would get stale quick.

I never even knew COD5 was coming.

L4D was fun but I'm wondering if its going to be to short.

If there are any other games I should know about by all means alert me.

as far as FPS go, no you got all the important ones. CoD :WaW, GoW2, L4D, and (Resistance 2 that doesn't count on your list).

can't go wrong with any, if you're the type to play online. Offline only, L4D is last, dunno about GoW and CoD

    lost odyssey?

Its a great turn based RPG that feels like it could have been a final fantasy around the VII - X era.

If you like RPG's I'd say Fable 2. It's a lot deeper than you first think.

Plus, you can shot people in the face with a blunderbuss.

Left 4 Dead! I guarantee you that it won't get old anytime soon. The demo only contains 2 levels and I've played that for 22 hours.

The full game has 20 levels. The demo had 2 partial levels (from what I've heard, both of the demo levels were shorter than they actually are in the full game). Plus with all the randomization features, I daresay L4D will last many people years.

I add another vote to L4D, only played the two partial levels and have put so many hours into it!

    L4D FTW.

(Also - damnit, there's no Canadian postal code starting with "L4D" - what the fuck, Barrie?)

L4D is definitely a winner. If the full game is anything like the demo you will be playing it for a long time.

Your wife is buying it? Get something you can play with your wife.

Games I can play with my fiancée include fighting games and rhythm games, but of course it's different for everyone.

You can play L4D splitscreen from one xbox, and she doesn't have to have a live account to play online, she can just be a guest

GoW2 is a great buy. The game is much better paced than the first Gears. Horde mode is also a lot of fun with friends. A pretty solid package if you do end up buying it.

If you have 2 PCs you can both play F4D in co-op mode.

You don't need two PC's. Split screen co-op will be in the full PC release version of L4D, albeit unofficially supported. It was already in the demo version before Valve patched it out (they didn't want bug reports coming in on that). Valve have stated that they'll re-enable it for the full release title, but it'll be an unofficial addition which you'll need to access via the command line.

Although unless she's a gamer already, it's doubtful that she'd be able to get into a game like L4D. Still, co-op can bring everyone together, so whatever, you would know best.

I'd suggest Neverwinter Nights 2 + Mask of the Betrayer addon (and potentially grabbing up the Storm of Zehir addon when it's released next week) on the PC RPG front, since I really liked playing these games, but they probably aren't as high profile as other titles mentioned here.
