Help! Laptop harddrive problem?

I really hope someone can help me on this.

My wife's laptop just gave her an error that one of the Windows system files was missing (XP). No problem, do repair from the system disk right? Wrong. Her CD Rom drive is completed pooched and won't run any discs.

I thought I'd slip her harddrive in my laptop and install Vista from there, but I'm a different hard drive format as her (she's IDE, I'm not).

We do have my laptop (Vista) and my old desktop PC (XP) both of which work fine and have functional dvd roms drives and I have an XP startup disk. Is there anything we can do to save her PC?
