Texturing Backgrounds

Has anyone notice Mike Krahulik's recent tendency towards texturing the backgrounds of the penny arcade strips? There are, of course, many ways to do this in photoshop, but I was wondering if any particularly photoshop-savvy individuals might hazard a guess as to what specific technique is being used here, as I'd love to apply it to some of my work. Many thanks!

Read my crappy comic. Oh man, it just sucks so hard.

Additionally, If anyone would like to post alternative methods and examples, I am all ears! Love to see new and unique practices.

The way he does it is pretty obvious. Does a flat line drawing on bottom, then a texture layer set to overlay, then a colored gradient on top of all of those probably just set to color mode.
