PS3: Choosing a Shooter (R2, COD:WaW, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3)

(Disclaimer - I know Fallout 3 is basically a first-person adventure game, but I still threw it into the list of possibilites)

All of these games seem to have a flaw:
  • Resistance 2: I hear the servers are clogged up right now, and it isn't even the holidays yet!
  • COD:WaW: I have COD4, and apparently it's just a WWII skin of COD4. I feel like I should get something else...
  • Far Cry 2: Perhaps too open-ended in terms of traveling. I also hear the best tactic is going off to the side, shooting at an enemy to draw them towards your fire, and then shooting them as they approach, and I can imagine that's repetitive. Standard online.
  • Fallout 3: Pretty erring glitches on the PS3, no online is a huge drawback to me.

I loved COD4, but it's so repetitive now that I don't know if I could enjoy COD:WaW. I didn't like Resistance 1 because of how weak the guns were (the guns still sound like peashooters), but apparently that issue - amongst others - have been fixed. Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 both seem like pretty great offline games.

I'll probably end up getting all of these titles at some point, but for the next couple of months, what would you recommend?

Also, although not on the list, is the longer I wait to get LBP, the better the experience will be since more good user-generated content will be available? I hear it's kind of hard to find good stuff right now.

I have spent about 50+ hours on Fallout 3 and am on my third run (in a row). So I would have to recommend that.

Fallout 3 is excellent, but if all you are looking for is an FPS it might not be your game.

If you are in it for the single player, so far WAW is no as good as COD4s campaign. Lots of invisible walls and not as good set pieces.

    Fallout 3 isn't a shooter it's a first (or third) person RPG.

(Note: I have not played CoD or Far Cry2)

For single player, Fallout 3 is pretty damn engrossing. However, it is NOT a shooter. Don't let the "you can play it all in FPS mode" line fool you. The "turn system" VATS is neccessary...and also damn cool. Don't deprive yourself of it if you get this.

For Multiplayer, R2 is pretty much the bees freakin knees. Co-Op is pretty fun, Competitive is also a good experience, and playing with the Rise of Wang people from the board here increases the joy. R2 also has a pretty good Single Player Campaign. It's fun. Seems to have been influenced by Halo in it's design, though some people want to resist that classification. To me, the Fully Regen health system combined with 2 gun set up pretty much describes Halo 2, so...there you go. Set pieces that I've run into so far are pretty fun though.

I recommend both FO3 and R2. Just depends on what you want more of.

Salmon'd for lies, there is no third person camera in Fallout 3.

Or more seriously, it can be played as an FPS, but if you have no interest in the RPG side of it at all, it probably wouldn't be satisfying.

Well, in all honesty, there is a Third Person Camera in FO3...it's just not good.

Yeah, if you think CoD4 is repetitive, don't get FO3. From the remaining 3 shooters, R2 is probably the one that would give the longest legs, with 2 excellent MP modes, but if you didn't like the first one, you may want to rent it first

I read that Fallout has some pretty deadpan animations, despite the lush environments, draw scale, etc. - does this kind of jerk you out of gameplay?

I do have a liking to RPG elements. Unlocking things is the most fun part of games to me - I am an Elite in RB6V2 and a level 5 Prestige in COD4. Unlocking clothes to customize your outfit is so much fun :)

I loved R1's coop and have seen mostly positive (although some very negative) things about R2's coop. I'm guessing the "negative" crowd is playing it offline only. Can you play with two people on one PS3 and join a group online? I'll probably end up playing coop quite a bit if it's that much fun. There is no shortage of people that would play R2 with me! I hate splitting the screen in half, though, I won't lie :x

Also, I'm looking at multiplayer right now for the pick-up-and-play appeal. Single Player is a very welcome addition, but with my time constraints right now it isn't too practical. I'm thinking Fallout 3 for the holidays when things slow down and I can really devote time to a hobby like a video game, whereas right now I have very little free time. I'd love to have a new game to play a couple of hours every few of days though; at the moment I'm pretty much done with the games I have.

R2 Co-Op is very fun...if you do it online with a party of 4+ with people who do their fraking jobs. Soldiers need to be upfront, shielding everyone else, Spec Ops should be throwing ammo and using their orbs/battle rifle between ammo drops, and Medics should be healing/healing/healing like there is no tomorrow.

If you have a team working together...it's pretty intense and fun. Playing with the [RoW] clan made for some of the most fun I've had in the game.

The Spec Ops/Med thing sounds a lot like Battlefield 2 on the PC. Is it anything like that? If so, I'm almost certainly buying it. I loved BF2, I'd consider buying Bad Company if it were more like BF2 on the PC. Speaking of which, I would buy a port of that.

Also, how are the maps? For some reason, R1's online maps reminded me a lot of Medal of Honor: Rising Sun's multiplayer maps, which is both good and bad.

    It's very similar, actually.

Spec Ops don't throw grenades (normally), they throw ammo packs. This is especially useful for Soldiers as the ammo packs give the Soldiers more ammo for their chain guns (which chew through ammo like it's delicious, delicious candy) and more "plasma" for the shield, which will drain under a constant barrage of enemy fire.

The Medic's gun drains life from the enemies. It's a constant stream gun...like a proton gun from the Ghostbusters (that's what it reminds me of, at least). As you drain energy, you can alt-fire a burst of healing for your teammates. You can also Overload a healing aura that's pretty cool too (though I prefer the unlocked Overload Chloroform). As you drain life, you also heal yourself, since your alt-fire doesn't seem to heal yourself.

Every class can revive anyone who falls down. The Medic does it faster. If you go down, and you aren't revived, you will still respawn after 30 secs. The way you lose the round is if all your team goes down. As long as one person is up, the respawn keeps counting. To revive, you hold Triangle while next to someone. As a Soldier, I've had the shield up, emptying rounds into the Chimera while reviving a teammate next to me. Intense.

If you want to play online, you'll be kicking yourself for skipping R2.

I chose to play through Fallout 3 first, but I've been waiting for that since Fallout 2.

    No, I haven't.

I think I will be going with R2. Thanks for all of the input guys :) How is Far Cry 2? Is it enjoyable or do all of these other games (particularly Fallout 3) just trump it?

Well I don't know how you are when it comes to trophies. FO3 should be getting a trophy patch, so for me, I'm holding off and playing some other games first... R2 and then BioShock is next.

As others have stated, R2 is pretty darn fun. I've already beat everything there is to the Co-Op mode (other than unlocking gear for each class). I've also spent a lot of time doing this :) Now I'm mostly just getting down on competitive and working on beating the game on SuperHuman mode (Almost beat it on Hard to unlock that)

I haven't fully beat CoD :4, so I think I'll finish that before I consider WaW. If you do choose to pick up R2, join us in Rise of Wang! :)

R2 seems like your best bet. The single player is great and the multi is awesome.

Turn off XMB notifications and you're fine. I've only had one "bug" so far, a Megaton girl's face didn't load all the way. Entered and exited a building and she was fine.

Reviewers as always blew the whole damn thing out of proportion.

Granted, I only played it for a couple hours, but I found Far Cry 2 to be awful. Basically it ground down to:

    -get across map
-get attacked every couple of minutes when driving, due to checkpoints that always repopulate with enemies
    -repair jeep everytime
    -turn off game

At least in Fallout 3 there are different enemies.

R2 is what you're looking for hands down. All the weapons pack a serious punch. Scale has been changed from few enemies lots of hit points to few hit points lots of enemies, or larger enemies :winky:

Multiplayer is the jump-on-for-one-round type of gameplay that you're looking for. Grab a mate or go alone into a co-op game, spend 15-25 minutes mowing down some Chimera and grats, you get some new swag.

The servers being down is actually a connection issue, not an issue with the servers themselves. While there are flaws, they're nothing that detracts from the enjoyability of the core gameplay. Single player shit can wait, and WaW is more of the same. R2 is really something far and away from R1. I think you'll like it.

Thanks again for the help! I read everyone's posts and it all helped immensely. Delish, thanks for the info about Far Cry 2 - I probably won't be getting lose to that until a price drop, then. I'll definitely be getting R2 soon and joining the RoW clan.

I'd heard about the textures on faces in F3 not loading. It does seem like something that would get blown out of proportion by reviewers. They need to patch the game for the Notifications bug though, that's some serious b.s.!

By the way, Baker, trophies don't matter to me anymore... I beat Ninja Gaiden Sigma on Hard and seeing as there's (understandably) no trophy for that, everything else is relative. That game is the hardest game I've played in my life. Maybe when Home is released it will be important though :)
