Booking rooms on short notice

So I'm traveling to Milwaukee this weekend to meet my girlfriend for a couple days of fun but - thanks to extremely limited resources and some bad luck - I haven't been able to book rooms before now. I've got a fresh paycheck in my hand and I'd like to get this taken care of today, but I still need to keep costs down inasmuch as humanly possible. Any tips or suggestions? We don't need anything beyond a bed and a bathroom. And for those of you who know Milly, we'd like to get a place in the Waukesha area if at all possible (it's a working trip for her and that's where her meeting is).
Check out some travel websites (aka hotels.com, expedia, priceline, etc) to see if you can grab some deals. I've never had an issue with this method especially if your not picky about the accomodations like you said. That being said you shouldn't settle for crappy so I would highly suggest researching the hotel you found a good price at before hand to see if it's legit and clean. Nothing worse than taking your girl to a hole in the wall hotel you found super cheap on the internet. As long as you check out the ratings and customer reviews on a few sites you should be fine.

Also check Kayak.com, you can enter all the dates/places and it will give you price comparisons across 3rd party distribution sites like expedia and orbitz.
I found a new website for just this sort of thing the other day.
Hotwire.com
It looks like hotels give them excess rooms, which they rent at a discount. The downside, is the website doesn't tell you exactly which hotel you're getting. But they do give you the location on a map, and how many stars it is. I think with some sleuthing you could get this to work out quite well for you. I did a search for milwaukee and it had several hotels in the area you mentioned. Hope this helps!
also, I highly recommend checking your hotel out on trip advisor before you book. I've changed my mind and booked a different hotel several times in light of reviews.
