The terrible smell of weed

Now before anyone gets into a heated debate, the advice i'm asking for is absolutely legal where my situation is taking place.

I currently am finishing another course at University and am staying at a very close friend's home (for free). He has a medical condition where he is allowed to grow medical marijuana to ease his tension and pain. Now, the house absolutely reeks of weed and its seeping into my clothes and ANYTHING I bring inside. While I'm not adverse to smelling like a grow op, I still am trying to maintain a professional scent while I attend class. Is there something that can clean the air in my room or some shit that gets rid of the smell? Febreeze no longer works and even washing my clothes everyday still doesn't seem to get the smell out.

Before people jump the gun and tell me to hit the road or move out, I currently can't due to financial reasons.

That's really odd. If you're not having physical contact with the plants themselves, or the smoke, it shouldn't be seeping into anything. Has there previously been weed in the areas where you store your clothing?

fill your sockets with glade oil air fresheners? My ex's apartment smelled like shit and garbage after i moved out, and when i went there later it smelt nice and it was all because of one of those oil air fresheners. So they are pretty strong.

Throw a bag of popcorn into the microwave. Hit the 5 min button. Walk away.

Presto! Your entire house smells like burnt popcorn instead of weed!

Why don't you recommend your friend use a vaporiser? It's an investment of a couple of hundred dollars but it will:
    1. More effectively deliver the drugs to his system
    2. Not smell nearly as much
    3. Be healthier for him

Pot plants smell really, really, potent. Like, a not-dried pot plant will stink up a large, uninsulated area.

I reccomend febrezing like a motherfucker. That works for the smell of smoke. You can also keep laundry sheets in your drawers or some shit.

Presumably his doctor may also know something to prevent this.

Yeah, but living around them shouldn't make the smell stick to your clothes unless you're actually touching them.

Actually, it can and does. There was a guy in my apartment building in college that grew and his entire FLOOR reeked, and anything and anyone in his apartment would smell for days. You think the smoke is potent-smelling? The mature plants are like skunks.

I've heard carbon-filter air purifiers will do the trick.

Also, if you smoke cigarettes, that is always a good way to smell yourself up in a less questionable way.

Yes it should. The resin on the plants will get into the air and then on and in everything else.

There’s really nothing that can be done other than sealing the room the pot grows in. Of course, when you do that you have to set up some other sort of ventilation system so that the plants don’t die. There are plenty of books dedicated to this very subject.

Yeah, attempting to make the space in which you are living air tight will help to keep the smell out. Duck taping the cracks between the door and the wall will keep smells in and keep them out. When you open it, it will require some effort to open it first, but after that it should do the trick for about a week or so. Just reapply duck tape as needed. I did that in my dorm to prevent the smell of weed from traveling; it worked like a charm. Not much you can do, as aforementioned, there are entire dissertations written on minimizing the smell of weed.

Call David Oreck right now! His XL professional air purification system is guaranteed! I saw it in an infomercial, that shit is legit! He's got patents pending on his truman cell technology!

edit: I'm actually not joking, I bet if you turned that on in your room it would work out for you.

    DUCT tape!

But i agree with your advice :)

The stench from plants goes through everything. I had a friend growing in his house many years ago, and actually stopped going to his house completely because of the smell. (i dont smoke so the smell was doubly unbearable) Try to seal off your room as best you can at all times, open your window as much and as often as possible, and just bear with it till you can move.

You may not be able to answer this, but do you know what type of marijuana your roommate is growing? Some strains smell way worse than others, and he may be able to find something even better that doesn't smell as bad. Northern lights, for instance, doesn't smell too bad until harvest time.

Your best bet is a HEPA filter or failing that, a HEPA filter in conjunction with a small ozone generator. Also, try asking your roomie to install a fan that vents outside. It could be as simple as a window fan, or you could be looking at a project involving a trip to Home Depot. If for whatever reason he doesn't want passers by to smell what's going on, it can help to vent it from a higher floor or even the attic.

This is so very true. So very, very true.

I don't know what would work here. You could try febreeze I guess.

Restrict airflow from the grow room to the rest of the house. Unless the plants are in the living room sitting on top of the TV, that shouldn't be hard.

    Use plastic containers or specially designed storage bags that offer an airtight seal. Make sure it's plastic though, or you'll have moisture problems and or, bug problems. It really seems like your only solution given the fact that;

    a) You're on a budget and cannot afford to go to home depot and spend X amount of money on a new ventilation system

    b) You cannot move because of your finacial situation

    c) It would be really hard for you to really afford anything else, or put any time into something more time consuming considering the whole reason you're there is to save cash and focus for school / bills / whatever your reason.

I used to get banned from my friends houses when I was younger because they thought I smoked, due to me always smelling like smoke because of my parents' bad habit. If regular cigarettes can make someone smelly, pot can do it.

A mature cannabis plant that is still growing will emit an incredibly strong aroma if it gets disturbed. For example if the plants were in a closet and you open the door too quickly causing a draft to blow the plants around they will stink up the entire house. If you open the door and just touch them they will stink up the entire house. Some varieties do stink worse than others, but as long as the guy has cannabis plants growing in his house he needs a carbon filtration system preferably coupled with some sort of exhaust.

Pot can do it worse, in my experience. It sticks in clothing about the same, but it's a stronger smell, and one fewer people are used to/likely to ignore. The plants smell worse than the smoke - personally, even though I don't smoke it, I like the smell of the smoke, but holy Jesus the plants can be bad. My grandfather grows it at the back of his property, and when the wind is right, it stinks all the way down the road.

Febreeze might work, but look into the stuff they sell to remove tobacco smell. Some of those products work wonders, and I've found they get quite a few organic smells out, not just smoke.

It works well to hang clothes out in the garage or similar outdoor sheltered area if they smell like any type of smoke. If you put them in the closet, the whole closet smells like smoke. Might not be a great option since you live with it, but it does work if you come home from a party or restaurant smelling like the guy at the next table.

I would also suggest a strategy revolving around sealing off your clothes rather than sealing off the plants. Sealing off your closet and dangling an air freshener in there would probably do wonders.

QFT. Look if the smell is all over the house its going to seep through everything. Not much you can do but try to cover it up. Finding a spot to stand your ground and de-weeding it might be the best bet. Might want to do it over a weekend so the air freshener has a chance to meld in. Might be a good Idea to get some decent cologne as well and apply a squirt after you leave the house.
