Can't Host Games and Port Forwarding Never Works

Howdy folks. I'm on Vista, hooked up to a network through a Linksys router. No matter what games I try to play, I can never host a server that people can connect to. I can connect to others fine. Everything I've looked up says I need to do port forwarding, which I have for several programs. It never helps.

Any other possible solutions, or am I stuck?

Take a look at your built in Windows Firewall and other network "features" of Vista. You need to allow the incoming connection at the computer level too, if you setup port forwarding on your router it matters little if the packets just bounce off Vista.

Can you unhook the router completely, and just go straight through the modem? If not, can you just stick your computer into the DMZ, and try it there? That should at least tell you whether or not it's a router issue.

Temporarily enable DMZ on your router for your PC's IP address (I would NOT recommend doing this as a long term solution). If that doesn't work, then it's probably not your router, it's your firewall software.

Oh yeah, I also have the programs checked off under the "let a program through" on the Windows firewall exceptions thing.

    Edit: will try that now.

I have this same issue and I know exactly how to fix it (well at least for me)

If your ISP is as evil as Aliant then the modem you have may be forced into NAT-restricted mode. In fact the modem they have provided me with (siemens speedstream 4200) has an Aliant custom firmware, and the only "improvement" in thsi firmware is disabling any way to change NAT settings.

long story short I have to get a new modem from my ISP, specifically one of the modems that is also a router just so I can change NAT settings.

anyway, maybe you have the same issue as me?
