Every holiday season, Amazon runs a Customers Vote contest, where people get to vote for one of three ridiculously good deals in a number of different categories (usually six). Whichever one ends up winning is actually put up for sale at the obscenely cheap price to a select group of people who voted in the contest; the other two in each category are offered at lower discounts too, so pretty much everyone wins. You enter the contest by just voting; the day before each deal goes live, a certain number of people are e-mailed to let them know they're in. When the deal goes live, you have a chance to grab any of the three deals in question. The other five days for this deal are pretty good too, but the first one caught my eye:
Friday, Nov. 28
1) PS3 Sci-Fi bundle: 80GB PS3 + remote, Star Wars: Force Unleashed, Firefly (Blu-ray) - $199
2) PS3 Action bundle: 80GB PS3 + remote, Far Cry 2, James Bond Blu-ray 6 pack - $229
3) PS3 Family bundle: 80GB PS3 + remote, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy Blu-ray, LittleBigPlanet - $199
So again, only one of these three bundles will be offered at this discount, and the LBP pack is winning by a huge margin. (It's my fave, too.) So vote if you want a shot at it, but even if you're accepted into the program you're not guaranteed to get the deal—seems to be first come, first serve even with the limited access.
How This Works
Welcome to Amazon Customers Vote 2008, your chance to compete for our most ridiculous deals of the season. The products that get the most votes in each of six rounds will be offered at ridiculous deal prices, and the runners-up will also be offered at slightly smaller discounts. (But they'll still be sweet deals.)
* Step 1: Vote.
Browse our six rounds of great products, and vote for the ones you'd like to buy at an amazing discount.
* Step 2: Check E-mail.
Check your e-mail the day before each buying round to see if you've been randomly selected to participate in the race to buy.
* Step 3: Go!
If selected, make sure you come back and log-in early on race day. We will have many more participants than deals, so the race is on. Good luck!
Keep in mind:
* You may vote in all six rounds on the same day if you like.
* The day before each buying round, you will be notified by e-mail if you've been selected to participate in the race to buy. You may also return to this page to find out whether you were selected.
* Customers Vote is a race. If you're randomly selected to participate in the race to buy, you still need to check what time the buying starts for each deal that round and log-in early, as we expect to have many more people participating than we have deals available.
* If selected, you may choose to purchase any or all of the items for that round, not just the product you voted for, as long as supplies are available.
EDIT: There's also an awesome chance at a 46" Samsung LCD for $699 on one of the other days, too, so keep an eye on that one.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

Still, that's a criminal deal, either way.
Fuck. I swore I wouldn't upgrade all my DVDs to Blu-ray...
Edit: Derp, it says right on the page they select voters randomly to offer the deal. So who knows, 500 units at that price, you might get lucky.
We'll see how it goes this time.
I think the sale goes to whatever item has the most votes, regardless of what you voted on.
The rules have changed a bit over the years, but if I'm reading the fine print right, you aren't locked into whatever you voted for:
You're not really entering for a chance to buy that specific item; it's more like, if you're accepted into the contest, you have the right to enter the store and grab whatever deals you can carry.
No seriously though, I will sell LBP and Pirates and have a very decent Blu-Ray player for less than 200. Not bad at all.
Yeah, they changed from last year. It sucks, because last year, it was a lot less time-sensitive. They only sent out exactly the number of invites as the number of units they had in stock, so 500 people won the chance to buy 500 PS3s. This year, it sounds like it's back to a free-for-all, which will destroy their servers. I remember two years ago when they had the $200 Xbox 360 and didn't even do the private invites; it was just a mad dash for everyone to refresh, and the site was down for hours.
Not that I've ever won anything in this, but hey, you never know.
I would pay $200 for a working ps3 George Forman Grill. (the grill part working, not the ps3, but if it did both that would be even more awesome)
But seriously, no love for LBP? The story levels are pretty enjoyable and it makes for a very good 2-4 person local coop game. If it helps, you could print out a "Nintendo Seal of Quality" and stick it on the case.

Alright good stuff. I'll be my fiancee's savior if I get her that stand mixer.

e: Shit, I forgot that you have to vote for the winning one. I FAIL.
I can borrow it from my buddy whenever I want, as he has more than one copy via a strange set of circumstance.
I will say this for LBP though; it's worlds better than Spore.

Cool.
Yeah, these deals won't ship to Canada, right?
This is very exciting. I've never done this before. I'll need to make sure my browser will autofill in all of my info to give me the best chance.
dream a little dream or you could live a little dream
sleep forever if you wish to be a dreamer
I mean, I spend $275 on my used EEE 701 4G, I could probably sell mine for $200, and profit from upgrading.

Because Amazon is shitty shit shit shit shit, and a giant bunch of fuckers who like to taunt us.
If I win the PS3 I'll give it to my brother for Christmas as a Blu-Ray player. Maybe that will make up for the fact that I convinced him to take advantage of a nice Amazon offer for a HD-DVD player just about a month before Blu Ray won.
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
Heh, That reminds me of a family member who bought all kinds of HD-DVD crap against my warnings.
Of course, after HD-DVD died, I get the " You're the technology guy, Why didn't you tell me this was the wrong choice! " :x
Man, that was a wasted $160 or so

To me, time is money... I'm mean, I'm all for great deals, but not wasting my life over it.
possible answer b) people don't think that clicking a button and waiting for an e-mail is that big of a waste of time
