So I'm thinking about grabbing one of these as a general hunting rifle and would like to hear reasons for/against purchasing it. Specifically in relation to a Winchester 70 or Remington 700. Will it, in fact, kill hogs dead? I've heard good things about this Browning fellow.

I don't know about the specific model you are looking at, but the best advice I can give is to buy one that supports many different types of ammo. My advice is to find one that fires .306 and .308. You can bring down anything between those two calibers. Hell, .308 is assault grade bad-assery.

Do you happen to know what the recoil difference is between a 270, 270 WSM, and a 308? Is it really much different one way or another? I was initially leaning towards the Remington 700 but I've heard that their QC has fallen in recent years because they are so popular. Of course guns have fanboys just like consoles, so I figured it might just be hearsay.
its a wonderful hunting round and probably the best deer round there is.
the ballistics are wonderful and I have nothing bad to say about it. WSM 270 is a whole different beast--its a magnum in a little package and it can take on any North American game no problem. I doubt you really need WSM 270 though, not in a primary anyway.
Both are easy on the shoulders for me at this point--.308 is going to feel a little stouter but not as stout as the kick of 30-06
In summary--if you want .270 or .270 WSM (obviously) I like the model 70.

The A-bolt is a good gun and the Winchester 70 is a total classic--but the prize goes to the Remington 700 in .308.
The caliber is becoming preferable to 30-06 with ammo shortages and the availability of milsurp--plus its just all around a good round.
The 700 is just a solid gun with the widest range of aftermarket parts available to any hunting rifle.

For .308 I like the Remington 700
