So ive' decided its time to expand my bass/guitar/keys repertoire and finally tackle the drums.

I know how they fit together and the names of all the parts and how to play a basic 4/4 beat and shit--but not much about quality brands.

What do I need? I want a full kit costing no more than 1k (less would be good but I understand really cheap kits suck)

Gretsch Drums Catalina Maple Fusion Drum Shell Pack with Free 16" Floor Tom

My drummer just bought this as our gig/recording set.

I play bass and am not too sure of the specific qualities that make a good kit. He said the maple is a great wood for live shows and also for recording. Warm, full sound and such. He changed the heads immediately to get his desired sound as he mentioned the stock heads being subpar. Also the free floor tom is a rather nice bonus.

For the price I don't know if there's anything better short of a used kit or scratch/dent special.

Edit: Apparently it also currently comes with a free cowbell so you know ol' Christopher Walken would approve.

All you need to start off.

    Bass drum 24-28"
Snare Drum with just a basic head
    One Tom 12-14"
    One floor Tom
A nice set of high hats without a tinny sound
A nice crash with possibly a ride though not required to start.

That's all you'll need. Look at Ludwig, or pearl.
