Red Cliff, its Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Dynasty Warriors: The Movie
So has anyone else seen this Chinese piece of epicness?
It's the most expensive Asian movie to date and it shows, the one battle scene towards the end was incredible and is up there with the greatest things I have ever scene. Ying Yang is not outdated at all.
Next part comes out in 2009 so here I am pumped up from seeing the first and now have to wait a few months for the second.
Fury.
But it will be worth it, I hope.
Also I know the movie is not historically accurate, but with action scenes like it has I don't care. It's good stuff.
It appears to be painting Cao Cao's army, AKA Wei, AKA "The Blue Team", as I like to call them, as the antagonist. Didn't they win in the end for better or worse?

Bah, all I know is Dynasty Warriors. :?
I'm definately no expert and it's been a years since I read up on it but iirc Wei is more or less considered the main agressor if you can label any one kingdom that. Whether they won or not kinda of depends on how you look at it since ultimately neither Wei, Shu or Wu ended up in control. I think Wei won out over Shu but fell to the Sima family who then founded the Jin Dynasty and proceeded to crush the remnants of Wu thus putting an end to the last of the three kingdoms.
Actually, I think I'm going to head to wikipedia and read up on it again right now.
*Edit*
I hope this has an English release, preferably with the option to watch it subtitled.

I don't understand, where is the cross dressing silly-voiced warrior?
I saw this when it first came out in China. Really really good movie. The original had English subtitles, so I'd assume any version available now will have them too. I think the second part is supposed to come out during Chinese New Year, which is just around the corner
A story about ridiculously-complicated battle tactics, gentle and pristine love-making, stupidly large amounts of wire stunts, and general all-around "THIS WAR SO SRS >:-|" narm.
... And an "ending" that leaves you gasping for, well, very little.

But that is what made it so good! It was a big budget action movie with crazy battle scenes, dueling Guqins (is that what it's called?) and a bunch of super hero generals. The bit in the begining when the dude yells "WHERE ARE MY REINFORCEMENTS?" and the fucking ancient China Master Chief shows up and rips shit up with a spear was hardly realistic, but it sure was cool.

One of the main goals of Romance of the Three Kingdoms was to link back to the Han Empire; China was ruled by the Mongols when the novel was written. Liu Bei was distantly related to the Han emperors, so he was naturally the hero of the story, as well as being virtuous and noble. Since Cao Cao was his primary adversary, he became the villain (as did Sun Quan later in the novel). From what I heard, Red Cliff is based more on the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, which takes a much more neutral view of the situation. Wei are still likley to be the antagonists, though, due to the battle being depicted.
Cao Cao's much larger force was completely routed, and Cao Cao himself was nearly captured.
Saw this last night. The opening battle at Chang Ban was pretty epic, especially Zhou Yun's rescue of the young master. I was a bit disappointed at the lack of Zhang Fei's holding the bridge, but they got the spirit of it in there with his unit holding the line for the peasants to retreat.

It would be a stretch to say he "won". By the end of the book* Cao Cao and all his heirs are dead and his kingdom is inherited by the successors of one of his advisors who eventually reunite China.
* Also remember the book was written during the Yuan dynasty (when the Mongels were in charge) which was over 1000 years after the events depicted took place. So it's pretty much a kind of Chinese Knights of the Round Table in terms of historical accuracy.
It got a limited European theatrical release, so I saw it a few months back and, as someone who has read Three Kingdoms, I thought it was pretty great. They changed a bunch of stuff, but it was an exciting, funny movie that didn't just mimic other modern wuxia flicks.
That said, we did get the 2.5 hour version, so I'm pretty excited at the prospect of seeing a version that's nearly twice as long. These kinds of releases take long enough as it is, but hopefully there will be an epic blu-ray version at some point. I'm disappointed to hear it won't be coming any time soon. Maybe there's a Chinese/English version, though?

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Seen both parts that have been floating about the internets and have English subs. Image and sound quality is very good.
Translation is ok, helps if your familiar with Three Kingdoms setting as all the Chinese names are the same.
I would actually be interested in watching the 2.5 hour version, as the full movie has pacing issues,
editing issues, some ridiculous sub plots
Zhuge Lian, Zhou Yu, and Xiao Qiao birthing a horse, wtf?!?
and even more ridiculous battle tactics (but what do you expect from a John Woo movie?).
IMHO, I would have loved a revisit of the Three Kingdoms in the style of HBO's ROME miniseries.
Red Cliff 1 and 2 on blu-ray have English subtitles, but since I'm not knowledgeable with either simplified or traditional Chinese I can't verify the quality of the translation. They appear to be the official release copies though, so I'm assuming they can't be terrible.

There was an old ROTK TV series back in the 90s made in China. It almost followed the historical novel word by word. Almost every scene described in the movie you get to see it in the show. It was a huge deal back then, because they don't really have CG, they had to really hire literally ten thousand dudes and dress them up in armor and have them run into each other for the big battle scenes. Most of the actors were not famous, it took them years to find a bunch of people who actually looked like the historical figures. It was pretty awesome watching it as a kid. I doubt you could find an English subbed version though.
Actually have the DVD set, picked it up when I visited China last year.
Started watching it again a month ago, it'll be a while before I finish all 84 episodes. :P

The last 10-20 minutes were pretty boring though.
This will be here until I receive an apology or Weedlordvegeta get any consequences for being a bully

After the Ying Yang battle that took place right before the final bit I needed a breather. That scene was epic.

Still no idea about a USA release but from what I am reading it's going to be a butchered 2.5 hour version with both movies combined into one.
Forget that noise.

God, I love that game so much. And yes, Lu Bu is the greatest treacherous bastard ever.
How ingenious was it to have your "HP" represent the men in your armies? So much excitement just watching those little bars whittle down.
And how on earth would you ever find Chi Tu Ma without a guide (thank you, Nintendo Power!)?
I see there was a Destiny of an Emperor 2! Pity it was never released outside of Japan.

I'd love a modern day remake for the DS. Portable Destiny whenever you want it.
edit: And yes, thank god for that NP issue that told you how to find the damned horse.
