I wonder why so few theatres are playing it (its not even playing in my city). Too controversial? Too underestimated?

Just wanted to point out that, in Canada, th movie is only 14A. And we gotta keep all the scenes. (even that one)

Fox wasn't sure the movie would connect with middle america so they gave it a tiered release. 800 theaters the week. 2200 theaters next week. so anyone that doesnt have a theater near them showing it....just wait a week.

also, it looks like Borat will be the #1 movie this weekend even with only 800 screens showing it. The #2 movie is Santa Clause 3 and it is on 3200+ screens.

Easily the most entertaining and funniest movie that I have seen this year. The ending is pretty much glorious. "That scene" was a bit ridiculous at first, but definately got better at the end.

I seriously can't remember the last movie where everyone in a packed theatre was so into it. Stupid town only had 3 night showings, but my group was lucky enough to make into one.
The movie is just glorious. So many lines, and so many moments of "No way. He's not going to say that..he just did!"

And yeah, the "scene" is hilarious. But for my money, I laughed the most at the bed and breakfast part. Just so funny.

I wonder how much the people in the movie knew about it, even afterwards. I mean, I'm pretty sure you need some kind of permission to put people in a movie - but the title of the movie is congruous with the character so theoretically they could get people to sign papers that give permission and still give them the impression that it's just for a documentary that'll be shown back in Kazakhstan. I don't really know much about the process.

HE gave them the impression that he was a kazakh journalist, they signed the release, which was probably difficult to read and kinda rushed at them at the end, and they signed it thinking they were going to be on a news show halfway across the world is some bumfuck country they had never heard of.

I actually talked to the director about this. They basically told them the whoel pitch about him making a documentary for Kazakhistan, etc. and had them sign the release. They made the release really long - long enough that no one would read through the whole thing. Buried towards the end was a passage that stipulated that they could do whatever they wanted to the signer. End result is that they got away with everything and there was not one arrest. They did come close a few times, however.

I just saw this yesterday and LOVED it. Quite possibly the funniest movie I've ever seen. I live in Pennsylvania and in what I consider to be a relatively conservative small city.

#1- The theater was PACKED and they kept selling tickets even after the show should have been sold out.

#2- Every single person in the theater was laughing hysterically (including me) at what most would consider the "offensive" parts. I think the audience I was with was just more open minded than most of the people in my city.

Really I just think people are smart enough to realize a movie subtitled "Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" just might not be a serious movie with a message. :P

In addition to it possibly having been random, there's also the chance he has a great-grandfather or grandfather from eastern Europe and was named for him. Many of those countries' pre-communist governments did not treat their Jewish populations well at all; Jewish emigration for more tolerant countries was not exactly unheard of.

    You touch upon something interesting...

in his promotion this summer/fall of Borat, Sascha Cohen has been going thru the motions of Borat, almost like an impression charade. He's not the likeable Borat. Like the Washington DC stunt, just seemed staged and lame.

In the movie, he is Borat, genuine and likeable amidst his detestable sensibilities. Sadly the character has become just a charictature in the promotional phase.
now all we need is a bruno movie

According to Variety, Universal Pictures appears to be close to signing a $42.5 million deal for worldwide distribution rights to Sacha Baron Cohen's next project, Bruno.

    http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=17256

to me tho, the Bruno character doesnt have many standout angles or laugh out loud chemistry. Of course it'd be hard to make a Borat sequel since everyone would know who he is...hed have to go to like Pashtun tribal regions of Pakistan or something, which would be hillarious.

Anyone seen the Ali G movie from 2002?

I knew I touched on something interesting, Entropy, that's why I said it :-).

I don't care though. He had to do that to get the news out to people not already in the know that he was funny and worth seeing.

So make the character a joke instead of a brilliant creation and work of deception, and then it's easier for people to laugh so they go see the movie.

Maybe if you were that intent on seeing it you should have gone early and picked up tickets! I loved the movie, but did anyone else get the feeling that a lot of the jokes were making fun of Borat, instead of Borat making fun of Americans?

For example the running of the jew, the bed and breakfast, the naked scene, they were all poking fun at how "backwards" Borat is. For me, that has never been the point of the character. Borat has always been about making other people uncomfortable or getting them to say something shocking. There was a lot of that in the movie, sure, but I wish there had been more of it, and less poking fun at Borat himself.

    Still, amazing, hilarious movie.
