How do I watch stuff on my PS3?

Ok, I have cable internet. I just got an N-wireless router so that I can access the internet with my PS3.

Is there a way to make a shared folder on my computer that I could put video files/wallpapers/music in so that I can play it on my big TV?

This is probably a dumb question to most of you but I can't figure out how I'm supposed to do it.

    Seconded on the TVersity.

I used it until we got a dedicated media server, a D-link DNS-323, for streaming to our PS3 and computers.

Oh this program is great (and appears to be free, so far).

Doesn't play my itunes episodes of Watchmen (mv4's), or my youtube video I uploaded. It's all screwy and weird looking.

But other than that it works awesome for my regular video files.

PlayOn (No link since I am at work, goggle it). $30 one time fee after the 2 week free trial period, but allows the watching of Hulu, Netflix, CBS, ESPN and YouTube on your TV. I use it on my 360 and it works great. Quality is not quite HD for Hulu, but still very nice looking.

Yeah, it's free, and transcodes media formats so that your PS3 can handle them without you having to convert them yourself. Easiest thing to use with your PS3, although the quality suffers for certain files.

    Does TVersity do NetFlix?

I am still using a Beta version of PlayOn for that reason alone.

My PS3 is connected to my lovely new TV with a PlayTV box thingy, and its fab. The PS£ has a massive hard drive so I can record stuff straight off the TV, or onto my PC then a memory stick and then play it on TV. I like it cos its simple enough for me to use and looks pretty, too.

The exact things 95% of girls ask for when buying electronics!

No, but really when I had my PS3 I used the same, and it does work well. Definately look into it.

Yeah, it's working great so far but I was hoping to be able to browse youtube and stuff on there.

So far it only shows my one uploaded video.

    Any way to remedy this?

you can use the ps3's web browser to watch youtube. otherwise you can add youtube clips to tversity, you just won't really be able to 'browse' as such, as individual clips have to be directly linked from the server side to get access

This brings me to my next question,

How safe is it to even go on the internet with my ps3? I mean, does it block adware and spyware and stuff? I REALLY do not want to even take a tiny risk that my playstation could get bricked or ruined somehow.

super duper safe. all that kind of malware is coded to specifically target windows based systems. your ps3's architecture has about as much similarity to your pc as your fridge has to your oven; ie, virtually none. besides, the browser simply wouldn't be given enough access to the ps3's core processes, and there's no way of running an executable file on the ps3 that's not expressly created for it and (i assume) encrypted properly. so yeah. it's not a concern
