So, I am developing a case of really bad alopecia. Until I get to the point where I am comfortable completely bald, I would like to start wearing hats more. Problem is, I hate hate hate ballcaps and while I like my fedora, I do feel it is pretty out of style to the point that I look awkward in it.
What are good hats to look for? Is this basically a fashion question that I should take to the appropriate thread? (I think it is in D&D.)
Flat caps are fairly in right now. They're called driving caps here in the states.

As further advice, have you considered just shaving your head completely? Like with people who bald as a function of age, the slow recession of the hairline and loss of hair almost always looks worse than a shiny, clean pate or buzz cut. You can still wear a hat, but I think you'll be happier once you get used to baldness.

This is likely my ultimate goal, but as I said, I'm not quite comfortable with baldness, yet. Especially since I am pretty sure I will not have a "shiny" head. Likely, I will have what many on that site have, which is large dark areas with many smooth areas inter mixed.
That said, it is definitely an option I am considering.
Yes, the darker areas would be where hair is still growing. (Unless I am mistaken on this fact, entirely possible.)

if you're younger than 30 beanies can be really cool. I've started wearing a beanie on days where I don't want to deal with a pink and blue mohawk, which is more often than not considering the amount of maintenance it takes. . .
also, you should strongly consider beardhat the father of all hats.

Amusingly, I just turned 30 this year. So, not sure beanies will really work for me.
You have 3 realistic options depending on how you dress. If you wear something like a peacoat and dress in collared shirts all the time you can get away with a driving cap or a Kangol hat. If you wear a snowboarding jacket or dress casually in t-shirts, you need to go with a baseball cap or a beanie.
There are alot of CS and Engineering students at my school who think they look like hot shit wearing a t-shirt, trenchcoat, jeans and a fedora (the fedora never looks good). It's like wearing wingtips and ripped jeans. I always avoid mixing formal and casual clothing in this way.
Driving caps and baseball caps, when always worn, are a completely obvious sign that someone is balding. I recommend that, even if you go the hat route, you go ahead and shave your head completely. You'll have your head covering while you adapt to the lack of hair, but you'll also be acknowledging that you're not fooling anyone, Mr. Different Cap Every Day.
I have a black fedora. People say I look like John Popper.
So it's getting upgrade to a cowboy hat.
Don't wear a cowboy hat. If you are not actually a farmer, rancher or ranch hand you will look like another fucking city boy tool.
Seriously, you will be noticeable and people who actually grew up in the country and around farms will laugh at you. The same goes for dusters, unless you are Neo.
Well for a hat to look good on you it depends on your heard shape and your face. To give solid advice it would be good to know your head shape. A picture would help immensely more
People will know you're balding, it just matters if you're hiding it or if you're just trying to look good. On top of that hats are situational toward your clothes.

This is not necessarily true if you are in certain areas of the South.

Weighing in on behalf of the fedora. Resist the urge to pair it with a brown leather jacket and a bullwhip--this will not get you laid. Fedora and a matching blazer though? Yes.
The flat cap is also acceptable with a sweater, or a pea coat or similar jacket. Wear it with a t-shirt and you will be labeled as a hipster and stoned to death in the street.
added: I think the question was whether Nashville and Atlanta qualify as fancy cities, not whether you will find anyone wearing a cowboy hat there. No one does the stetson in Atlanta. Ditto Savanah.
Dammit, I forgot Maddox is where I should go to for all my life decisions. I actually used Orbitz earlier in the year and didn't get dicked over. What was I thinking?!

I wear this on an everyday basis, since I like it I might as well recommend something like it:
It's a derby. Slight upgrade from baseball hat/fisherman hat, not as quite as formal as a fedora. The comment I get most often other than "nice hat" is "it looks like you belong in a band". Not having a wide brim is a plus.
Of course, it's still pretty anachronistic and probably impossibly unfashionable except amongst beard-wearing nerd types, but it's a thought.
I'll second the military caps, though they really depend on you style. I know a guy who wears one most of the time (he's bald) and does quite well with it.

failing all else, no one gets in your face if you're wearing an ushanka.
Well, they certainly make you look cunning.

Don't get me wrong. It is not necessarily the look of a shaved head I dislike, there are a ton of considerations for me.
If that's the case and you have a light complexion you could consider bleaching your hair and buzzing it short to reduce the contrast.
I second flat caps. Also toques if you're in an area that gets cold.

Not sure what a beardhat is.
I hadn't heard of beardhats before, either. I have to say, I like the style.
Farout Foolio - Could you post a link to those FF hats?
You'll have to request the hats specifically. Pretty much everything except the lumas is done by request.
She'll do anything!

We ain't got none of them fancy _cities_.
Atlanta, not so much.

But not as awesome as my beard.
Those without tend to be envious.

I would advice not getting a camo one unless you've actually served, though.

What the heck? I turn 30 and I have to have a cold skull?
I don't agree with any age limit on beanies.
He's not even bald.

Beanies are perfectly acceptable in 30+ (during weather that warrants them only), they are simply not cool. They are just hats.

That's actually a chullo. Get your hats straight.
They are pretty fashionable.

Actually, anyone know where I can get one? My hat size is a little on the large size.
It's for that mid 20th century look, anywhere from the 1930's to 60's
I have one and girls love that hat. They always come pull on it..
