Help a guy out : Sushi on TV

edited December 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
Hi,

I'm writing a report about sushi, and its explosion into western society. I have a handle on the basics, but part of the essay is dealing with representations of sushi on television/in movies. I have a few of examples thus far, including Peep Show, and King of the Hill, but I figure I could always use a few more.

If you can remember a particular scene from tv/film (preferably western made) which deals which characters eating and/or talking about sushi I would greatly appreciate it. Bonus points for anything comedic.

Also, if you can discuss why you thought the scene was memorable, or why you thought it funny, include that as well and I might be able to include it for an alternate perspective in my paper (if I find your insight useful I'll fire off a PM to make sure you're OK with me using your opinion).

Thanks

The Simpson's where they go to the Sushi resturaunt and Homer eats Fugu and thinks he's going to die.

    http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Simpsons-Go-To-A-Sushi-Restaurant-Homer-eats-Fugu

First, it's the Simpson's, so it's inherantly funny. Second, it shows a good perspective on Western societies Love/Fear relationship with Sushi. Bart orders the most disgusting thing on the menu, while Homer orders everything.

There's an Upright Citizen's Brigade sketch from Season 2 about a man who goes bankrupt because he won't fire his personal sushi chef.

    Poor quality video.

There's also the eating sushi off of naked models thing.

Episode 1 of Season 6 of the Sopranos featured Tony and Carmella eating at a sushi place pretty prominently a few times.

I'm sometimes bored enough to find myself watching G's to Gents on MTV and they had a challenge in which they had to eat sushi with a respectable Japanese gentlemen. The interesting thing was that the sushi was a particularly rare kind which is made with blowfish which, if not prepared correctly, is extremely poisonous. It was fun to watch a bunch of "G's" cower at the thought of dying from eating sushi.

That's the Fugu Homer ate in the Simpson's episode.

Exactly, I checked out your reference and it'd be great to use in an essay. "I've never heard of a poisonous porkchop!"

Season 1, ep 1 of Michael Smith's Chef Abroad

    http://www.chefmichaelsmith.ca/en/home/TVShows/chefabroad/chefabroadepisodesummariesseasoni.aspx
1001 Blue Fin Tuna, Canada to Japan
Deep in the Atlantic Ocean swims the most sought after prize in the sea – the Atlantic blue fin tuna. Join Chef Michael Smith as he follows the incredible journey of the prized tuna from its catch off the shores of Prince Edward Island, Canada, to exotic Japan and a Michelin-starred sushi restaurant in Tokyo.

The fishing part won't be much use but when they get to the auctions and how the tuna is judge, etc, you might be able to use some of it. Not really sure where you can watch the episode though.

A few weeks ago on Bizarre Foods, Andrew Zimmern went up to Maine where he ate at a sushi bar (owned and operated by a Japanese trained sushi chef) who used local food in his rolls (Fiddle Heads for instance).

Breakfast Club – lunch – rich girl eats sushi for lunch. That’s done to display sophistication, maturity, separation for the life of a “normal” kid.

1-800-COLLECT commercial – Terry Bradshaw, mispronouncing the word, says something like “Suchee? Looks like bait!” I assume they were trying to prove that real men don’t eat raw fish, that southerners are unsophisticated, or that Terry Bradshaw lost his hair.

That’s all my brain feels like giving me access to at the moment.

I saw this a while ago and it's very tongue in cheek. It's a must see for anyone who frequents sushi bars.

Although I have seen them, I still don't know what the little dishes of salt outside the doorways are really for.

I just want to say, that naked model sushi thing was the dumbest thing I have ever fucking seen.

    Naked Sushi Girl

    Wow, that is hilarious.

I like the interviews with the diners at the end. You can sense the uncomfortableness of the guys.

There is an episode of "Kenny vs. Spenny" where they see who can go the longest wearing an octopus on their head. The loser has to eat octopus sushi off his opponent's naked ass.

    Pretty funny episode.

I think it's lucky. Salt is sacred in Shinto.

Wow - you guys came through in a big way, thanks a lot.

I'll be checking out a few of the examples I've never seen, and making reference to Homer and fugu.

I can't believe I forgot that one... I'm now convinced that senior papers kill more braincells than crank.
