MP3 Players for old people

H/A, help me buy something for my dad.

I'm looking to get an MP3 player for my pops, and pre-load it with a crapload of his old favorite radio shows.

Here's the thing, my dad's old, therefore...

I need it to:
  • be relatively cheap (less than 50 bucks)
  • have an easy to read screen with simple navigation of tracks
  • have at least 2gb of storage (I have like 1.88 gb of tracks for it so no more storage is necessary.)
  • either have self-contained speakers or have a small base for audio-playback (he won't use headphones)
  • recharge from a wall outlet -or- use standard batteries (no computer, therefore no USB charging) -also this applies to the speaker base as well, if I go that route.

In fact, it doesn't even need to be portable. He will only be using it while in one particular area of the living room. Something like clock-radio that can play mp3s off of a SD card would be perfect.

The idea of a clock-radio-cd player that has mp3 playback off of the cds is also plausible.

However, he has a stereo in the living room already, but it lacks mp3 playback. Therefore, I'd like to avoid getting something that redundant.

Also, it will be placed on an end table next to a couch, so its size needs to be relatively small.

You might want to look into getting one of those really cheap DVD players (or check if your father's DVD player, assuming he has one, already has MP3 playback.) After that, all that's left is running a cable from the DVD player to the stereo.

The cheaper, "no-name" dvd players tend to have fewer problems with playback, because they'll try to decode anything, instead of being geared for particular formats.

Also, with those DVD players, you get super-easy navigation (using the TV) and usually, DivX/XviD playback as well. Some even have memory card slots, ostensibly for viewing pictures, but they also usually work for audio playback.

Otherwise, you might want to consider an iPod with a dock, although that would probably be too pricey for you.

You can get a 2gb sansa for like $20...

Check woot.com daily since they love to unload their sansas.
