S.O.S. Computer help needed

Ok, so I don't really know how it happened, since I am very careful about this sort of thing, but I'm 90% sure that I have a virus on my computer. I get random pop up firefox windows (these started about a week ago), some programs no longer work properly, including McAfee, I can't use my "Disk Cleanup" from my C:\ properties, and today when I restarted my computer, I had to hardboot it because of infinite pop-up windows, then I later got the blue screen. I managed to get the system stable enough to run, but I'm concerned that it may not last long. I know reformatting is an option, but the problem is that I can't seem to locate my OS discs; I haven't needed them for 3 or 4 years. Does anyone have advice?

With a computer in that state you essentially have to reinstall the OS (I assume Windows). Even if it's not a virus that doesn't sound like a stable install.

There are some things you could probably do to get it workable, including disabling a bunch of startup programs, but that will really just delay the inevitable at best.

Still, here are very brief instructions for Windows - if you press F8 as the computer is starting up you can go into safe mode which will probably not be affected by whatever is going on with your computer. From there you can click Start, Run, type msconfig, press enter. This is where you can mess with everything that starts up automatically on your computer. If you want to boot up with almost nothing extra, click diagnostic startup. This will stop a lot of viruses/spyware but also stops important things you may have installed, so don't be surprised if not everything works after you do this. But that may get it into a temporarily usable state.

Also, whilst in safe mode run your anti-virus program. Since its a bit removed out of windows will often find and remove more stuff

    Also stop using McAfee.

It looks like a Vundo infection. It's a nasty virus
    Get Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. Excellent program.

I'm running a scan with the anti-malware now. Thank you for the tip. I hope this works.

It was the vundo virus. Good call. And that program worked perfectly, removed 57 infected files. Thank you so much.
