Man, I'm really excited about getting this, even with all the troubles. They're probably gonna fix them, and my PC is quite stable... I mean, I never had a single crash or problem with Fallout 3 in dozens of hours of gameplay.

maaan, I bought on steam and it was working fine on the 4th(albeit tremendously laggy but I've got a terrible processor) and now today and yesterday it won't start up. Steam launches social club -> I hit play in that -> the LAUNCHGTAIV.exe launches after 5 seconds and closes 5 seconds later.

In processes the LAUNCHGTAIV.exe shows up immediately after I hit the button and GTAIV.exe does show up, looking like it should be open (taking like 10x more CPU magic than anything else) and then they both disappear

Neither have I. Fallout 3 was really stable, at least in my experience.

Just so you know, Valve are offering refunds to people who can't get GTA IV working, just in case you need it. It's pretty rare that they do something like that.

Try verifying the files in Steam right click then properties. This fixed this problem for me when it showed up.

Limed. You really wonder how much they talked to Nvidia etc, even a lowly tech monkey there would have told them how stupid that is.

That is probably the dumbest thing I have ever seen. I mean the GTA3, VC, and SA ports weren't beautiful but at least they didn't seem like they were done by retarded monkeys.

Even so, my roomate bought it off of Steam day 1 and he's had almost no issues. There's a bit of pop-in during cutscenes when the camera changes suddenly and sometimes the textures seem messed up, but other than that it runs smoothly, looks like the console version only higher resolution, and supports way more people in multiplayer (which looked kind of fun).

Don't most games just have those options under the advanced settings and have the basic stuff for the less computer literate?

Yeah that's pretty incomprehensible, and the interview doesn't give much leeway for it being a misunderstanding.

Although I agree that a lot of the "bad performance" issues probably stem from people trying to max out the game when you're REALLY not going to be capable of it on any hardware. Things like draw distance and crowd / traffic density can be maxed out anywhere from 5-10 times what was running on the 360, and that's excluding the already higher resolutions. I still think that's at least partly Rockstar's fault though. They needed to give some sort of baseline indicator of what the game was originally running on on the 360 so that people could start from there and work their way up to whatever their system can handle.

Uh, because at a low resolution you wouldn't really be able to see the greater shadow / effect detail anyway? (Or at least, not as well.)

You'd have to be talking really low resolutions, like 800 x 600, before the change in detail is "unnoticeable". Beyond, that, tying the visual effects to the resolution really is a daft thing to do.
I think it's stupid too, sure, but it's just about the least incomprehensible thing I've heard in a long time.

YMMV. As far as I'm concerned, I've never seen any other dev take a measure like this, and it's easy for me to understand why. There are better ways of "simplifying" the issue of graphical quality than tying it directly to the resolution.

Wow, I want my fucking money back for this shit. I install, activate, verify, register, login, load, wait, load some more and now I don't have any textures on ANYTHING. Fuck you Rockstar, fuck you Games for Windows and fuck you Bestbuy for not giving me my fucking money back. It was $50 wasted IMO. I installed the beta drivers, and even tried setting everything down to their lowest settings with no luck.

If the game doesn't work on your setup aren't they obligated to give you your money back? I mean once my mom bought my little brother a game way to graphically advanced for his cheap little laptop and was able to take it back when it wouldn't run it.

Most places have "my computer wasn't good enough to run it" as the least likely reason to take something back (not saying it has never happened, though). Some stores have signs posted by the PC games saying to make sure you check the recommended specs on the game box.

Besides, it sounds like this poster's problem was buggy software and not necessarily computing power.

Yeah, my specs aren't the problem. I am running it on a Q9300 @2.5ghz, 9800GTX, and 4GB ram.

Specs definitely aren't the problem for me, I can crank every setting as high as it goes (with no restrictions) on 1920x1200 and get at least 35FPS, but everywhere I turn shit turns invisible and takes four seconds to appear.

Updating my drivers fixed the flickering shadows... man it was like watching a strobe down a kalaidoscope, almost unplayable. Still have problems with invisible objects popping in to view, but I guess future patches will address this, I suppose I have the game running as good as it is going to now.

Also, the shadows look awful, like someone went mad with the spraycan tool in MS Paint. I can't understand why they haven't included all the 'usual' graphics tinkering options.

But the cityscapes look incredible. Driving through the city in the pre-dawn mist was totally believable.

Assuming we're not misunderstanding Rockstar's statements, those are all "linked" to your resolution selection.

If this is happening your texture settings are too high. Drop them back to medium and they should load in quickly. That's assuming you're having the problem I was having. Framerate was OK with textures at high but they took ages to load. Put them back to medium and it seems to have fixed the problem. Mostly.
Also fuck those beta NVidia drivers.

Incorrect. Many, many people are having an issue with textures not loading. It's a bug in the design.

I turned the res down and that fixed it. Now I've turned it back up again and it's all fine. The game still really really doesn't perform like it should, but my FPS is the same regardless of settings, so...

Not at the time they weren't. I would have to say, with all the "fancy" graphics now, there's maybe a higher number of things that can go wrong, but the over-all badness of the port quality is pretty much the same.

edit: I apologize, I apparently failed to detect the sarcasm in your statement. Tone of voice with text, etc etc...

    ...what?

The previous ports were the best versions of their respective games. They ran well, looked great, and were perfectly stable. And they were reasonably moddable.

Why doesn't R* release the PC version at the same time as the others? Someone mentioned piracy but if Fallout, CoD, Far Cry etc can come out on all platforms at the same time, why can't GTA? Even EA only delayed Dead Space's release by a week (I think).

She contradicts herself about her reason for having tags on her furniture (first OCD, then having moved from the 'Midwest'), is extremely edgy about any details about herself, EVERY question Niko asks is turned immediately back onto him, she outright nags him about people he knows, and a couple of other things. Every other question she asks is whether Niko hangs out with criminals.. What the hell? It's exactly like that Family Guy episode where Peter goes undercover to stop drugs at the high school.

    GTA IV PC:

All forums related to it are an ocean of technical issues and bugs, for a game that was released months ago on the consoles. This will lead to alot more piracy than normal, and the powers that be will look upon the situation an announce that PC gaming is infact dead due to piracy.

We want our games the same day they come out on the consoles, and we want them to run reasonably well on the average gamer's system. These demands are unreasonable to the game companies, and they wonder why piracy is so rampant.

If they can't be bothered to give a shit why would they assume consumers would. I mean I know the PC doesn't bring in the big bucks compared to the console, but christ on a bike how much does porting a game properly cost? It can't be that much

I can understand the time-delayed release for marketing purposes. GTA IV's lag (6 months? Something like that) wasn't bad compared to most ports.

What pisses me is developers shoving their unrelated services down my throat (hi, G4WL and R* Social Club), DRM (hi Securom), stupid decisions in the name of simplification (hi resolution douchebaggery), and stupid attitudes towards the PC community (hi gloating about your antipiracy measures as many paying customers can't play the game). At least they didn't pull an Epic. Yet.

I've never bought a PC version of a GTA game, but I do recall quite a few people complaining about the other PC ports around their release - particularly Vice City. I do have a computer modern enough to actually play PC games now, but I'm already sick of DRM debacles after FarCry 2.

Also, the video maker thing is interesting, but that first video someone posted has way too much "let's spin the camera around a central focal point 8 billion times and randomly change speeds and zoom in and out" going on.
