All I see that's worse is a lack of shadows, lower-res textures and a lower poly count. Otherwise, there's really not that much of a difference.
So basically everything looks worse, but aside from that, there's no difference? I mean honestly what can you change about an engine other than the lighting, the textures, and the detail density? I guess you could always make the animation better (GTA IV does this), or expand the size of the game world (ditto). But yeah...
All I'm saying is that it looks nowhere near a modern game should, there's no reason to take what I said so literally.
Then why did you post a picture of an actual PS1 game as though it were somehow comparable?
Honestly, hyperbole is dumb and we should stop using so much of it
Anyway, I'm guessing the reason the port is so terrible is they wanted to release it by Christmas and they couldn't put enough work into it before then. Because rushing games out for the holidays has worked so well in the past

Well, that's actually a screenshot of the Windows version of the game... but semantics aside, fine, it doesn't look like a PS1 game. Which is why I said as much and compared it more to a first-gen PS2 game. But it doesn't really matter because we all agree anyway that it looks terrible.
As for the release, I'm guessing that they focussed more on the anti-piracy features of the game than the port itself. Porting a game from the 360 to the pc shouldn't give such bad results after close to six months of work.

They paid someone else to do pretty much all the anti-piracy shit
It did not in fact detract from the amount of hours they put into the port
Well, aside from things like the wonky camera if you use a crack but come on that couldn't have taken very long to do
Which means this is literally all the work they put into it
Been having a lot of fun playing team DM with Darth_Mogs, greeble, and MaleChai.
Darth_Mogs, even though we spent a lot of time playing around to get 6 Stars in Free Roam to find out that it doesn't give a trophy, was still loads of fun. If I'm ever in need of some cash and plan on robbing a bank, you're the first person I'll call

Hell yeah. Man, those were really awesome times. Especially when we had the FIB Armored Car.
Except for when I sucked for, like, the first few rounds of every new day. That was odd.
Did you ever get that trophy? I could've checked, but I haven't yet. I just got the Liberty City (5) and am planning on working on the 6 Stars one after I drop a ton of cash on Jacob.
I hope the PC issues get worked out, because that multiplayer is too damn fun for people to miss out on.
What I want to know is why Nico is always needing more money? I have 30 grand with only clothes and guns to pay for and I have plenty of both. He should just go rent a condo or something already.

Yea, I'm kinda taking a break from the 6 Stars trophy, played through more of the single player, just got my Liberty City (5) trophy as well and the one for "catching 20 criminals". Most Wanted trophy is gonna be a pain, after doing some searching... basically each island has its own set of most wanted, so 30 bad guys to mow down....

Yeah. That one's kind of a pain, especially since THE COP CARS SUCK OH MY GOD WHY IS IT SMOKING ALREADY I JUST HIT ONE PERSON.
I'm working on that one too. And the Car-jacking one. So many vehicles..
I'm working my way trough all the singleplayer trophies before moving to multiplayer. My goal at the moment is to get the Liberty City Minute trophy, seems easy enough. I've finished Three Leaf Clover and have put in less than ten hours so far.
Liberty City Minute was deceptively easy. I had ten hours left in the time limit and the last two missions to do by the time I realized it was as good as mine. The only parts where you really get jumpy about things is when missions have to be triggered by the cell phone. For example,
I did 'The Holland Play...' part one and you know, called Dwayne, yadda yadda. In Niko's 'thinking time' for deciding which to off, I completed, like, twelve missions and went out on a date and a hang-out before I got X's call that initiated part two. I literally had forgotten about it by that point.
But I really think it's fairly impossible to go over the limit unless you're not really trying for the trophy.
Installed via steam today. Nvidia beta drivers helped, hopefully the patch fixes some of the performance issues. I'm running 35 FPS @ 1680x1050, Medium textures, high rendering. Quite a far bit under my monitor's native resolution (2048x1152), but it's impossible to coax a playable framerate out of that on my 8800GT without a game that looks quite similar to GTA3.

I spent hours doing jumps and playing with the swingset.
Gameplay question here: Is it possible to incapacitate people when you shoot them?
I've had quite a few cases where I shot NOOSE officers (in missions) and had them kind of lie on the floor, moving about slightly, and calling out things like "I've been hit!" or "Someone get an ambulance!"
Similarly, I've also had people fall out of their cars when I hit them too hard, and kind of lie there.

Yeah, after they take so much damage they will fall to the ground. Depending on how bad it is, they can end up getting up later, or just slowly die. I have never seen the paramedics save anyone's lives. They usually end up killing people just getting to the emergency.

The moment a person drops a gun, they're no harm to you. They'll crawl around, beg for mercy, but that's pretty much it. I think this happens when you shoot them just enough times to get rid of all the red bars in the reticule, without headshots.
Headshots are fun by the way, especially when the person's backed up against a wall and you see all the blood splatter behind them.

Before moving to Three Leaf Clover, I spent four in-game days doing nothing except bumming around and doing random character missions, waiting for my date with Kiki. Then, I went out with her like three/four times to get her fondness for me all the way up (to avoid the three-star rating at the end of Clover) and I still didn't hit the 10-hour mark.
Okay, so I was trying for the achievement where you fly a helicopter under every major bridge over water in the game. When I first started, it showed me where each one was on the map, but then about halfway through, all those markers vanished. I need one more, and cannot find where it is. Anyway to get those markers back on the map?
Also, how many heli-tours are there? I have taken each one of the 4 at the heli-tour place, but I don't have that achievement, either. Unless you need to sit through each of them. I got impatient and just skipped the final two.
I think most of this isn't that dicky. The last bit is but the first two parts are pretty reasonable. I deal with tech support issues and it is impossible to solve problems that people are unwilling to bring to me.
I think it's pretty dicky that they're saying they can't solve these issues because people are ranting and so on. There's plenty of detailed posts on the GTAForums elaborating these problems, with seasoned users even providing assessments of why they think these problems are happening and how they think Rockstar can deal with it. It's kind of insulting to anyone's intelligence for Rockstar to suggest that the users are just complaining and not providing any details.
I will agree to that. I didn't know they were talking about their forums or that their forums were actually designed to be used for troubleshooting. I thought they just meant message boards in general.

I believe anytime you fly under a bridge the markers come back.. Try flying under a bridge, and then pausing to see if any came back. I had this same problem, but this is what I did and it worked for me.
As for the heli-tours, there are 6 landing pads at the place. 5 of the 6 will spawn the heli's you need for the tour. Some heli's only show up at certain times of the day (like night/day)

Yeah, I tried flying under a bunch of bridges with the hope they'd be back. Didn't work. Balls.
Well shit, I thought there were only 4 heli pads there. Open your eyes, Niko!

The shadows do bother me in that they're kind of...spotted? Or dithered, i don't know what the proper artistic or graphical term is. But I want an option to either just turn them off because they look awful or to turn on angled block shadows or something.
Distant textures still take a moment or two to load when switching views quickly.
Neither of these impact gameplay though and so it's not a big deal. God, car handling is much more difficult than I remember in previous GTA games but I guess I have to stop flooring it everywhere and around corners. But whoever insisted that the lowest settings in GTA IV looked like a PSX game, oh man, I couldn't disagree with you more.
And I feel like I'm the only one ignoring Michelle? Was that her name? Mallorie's friend. I read the spoilers and I didn't really make the connection, I just kind of thought she was too weird for me and not particularly interesting. So I didn't really make an effort to date her. But man, I love Niko's lines during his dates.
"I haven't met a lot of people here..."
"Yeah? All I've met are assholes."
those aren't exact quotes, but it was something like that
You can turn the shadows off. Turn the slider down to 0.
Also it's much easier to drive without hitting things in hood view. I personally only use it for intense chases since all the bouncing makes my head swim, but it does make it easier to take fast corners.
If I'm not being chased I stay in third person view and just hit stuff all the time anyway. I figure Nico is just a really bad driver.
Online play is okay-ish
I've not had any success joining other people's games on the browser, nor any quick join.
But when i made my own lobby people joined and that seemed to work. Might have something to do with my Uni's net structure or GTA's own netcode.
But what i did play online, rocked.
I've got a live silver set up, if I hit HOME while in game it shows the overlay with me signed in but whenever I try to find multiplayer games it tells me I need to connect to live
The guy over at RPS.com said the review code he played was just fine. He said he had to turn things down a bit, but there wasn't any missing textures or crashes or any other problems.
Sure wish that patch would come out soon and fix da memory leak!

So I'm going for 100%. I just completed the story (and got the Liberty City Minute trophy, thank you very much) and was doing the random character missions. I've done everyone else but I can't seem to find Pathos for his second encounter. A lot of time has passed since I did his first one and I've finished everyone else's. He just doesn't show up at the place he's supposed to be. What should I do? Will I have to restart if I want 100%? Help!
