I never had any problem playing Gears multiplayer when it launched. It doesn't have SecuRom on it, so I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
It was a really good port that never crashed once for me and ran well.
Gears didn't have securom. I know that.
The co-op was uber-fucked, and it was one of the earliest implementations of GFWL. It had a penchant for crashing randomly for a lot of people, and some people lost their save games often due to GFW problems (like what just happened to LaCabra).
Apparently doing some research I found out that you cannot disable bloom or shadows completely. What in the fuck?
Even if you try editing the config file for the graphical settings you can only lower the bloom levels to 0 but they are still there so there is no performance drop and no motivation to even do this.
It's a fucking post processing shader, it shouldn't be impossible to turn it off. Same with the shadows, while they can occasionally look nice, they usually look like complete shit so any reason to keep them on isn't there.
I'd just like to see how much of a performance increase I would get by having these settings fully disabled.
I never encountered any problems. It was a solid port.
In a metaphoric sense, you joined a large group of people in driving through a mine field. Many died in their own burning wreckage, but you. You rode off into the sunset unharmed.
That page for the patch is kind of hilarious in its simplicity. In spite of all the technical issues, I'm still weirdly fascinated by this game. I loved it on the 360, and would love to get some more achievements out of it and mess around with the video editor. Does it look better than the 360 version even if you can't run it at the highest settings?

When the stars are right, the key to unlocking R'lyeh will shine throughout the black depths. And when great Cthulhu rises from the sea to subjugate mankind, he will release a patch to make GTA4 work properly.
But we'll all be too dead to enjoy it.

Man, what the hell. I feel sorry for a character in GTA. What the hell is happening to me?
First safehouse change:
Until Demitri's betrayal, I hadn't cared for Roman at all. After everything went totally balls-up though, I felt really sad for him. His existence had been pretty pathetic, but it was an existence nonetheless, and now, fresh off the boat, Niko comes in a dicks up everything.
When he started talking about the dream he'd had it set off the alarm bells, but man. I thought whatever he needed to get would some some stupid crap for Niko, but when he said it was a ring for Mallorie I realised I'd pegged him completely wrong as a person. Not to mention getting the cab company up and running from nothing.
I guess this makes the first GTA where, filler missions be damned, I'm actually wanting to advance the plot.

Sadly, there's a shitton of filler missions. In fact, everything in Bohan is filler.

That's a technicality based only on opinion (in this case, fairly correct...) but as opposed to previous GTA games, all missions are required except for things like side missions for Jacob or the assassinations, etc.
I haven't played San Andreas, and I didn't play any missions of 4 when I was over at other peoples' houses. Have the missions gotten easier?
The last area of GTA3 had a bunch of BS missions where there were so many conditions required to beat the missions that I just got frustrated and gave up. Vice City wasn't as bad, but there were still one or two missions that made me break out the cheats because I got tired of running them over and over.
I'd love to pick this up someday when it...uhh....works.
I'd say this game was harder, but mostly because the mouse controls are jumpy and imprecise compared to SA/VC/GTA3.
Do the missions still have a lot of conditions on them? I still have flashbacks to a mission near the end of GTA 3, where you had to get 5 cars to chase you into an abandoned lot, and they would ram you constantly. For the entire mission, there were conditions on it where you could only change cars a couple times at specific points, and even then occasionally the game would bug out and you'd lose even for changing cars under cover. I actually played 3 after VC, and that single mission is the reason I've never played SA or dug into 4.

This was where the true beauty of the PC version shined.
I played this entire mission and on Independence FM the entire time was playing "Don't Stop Me Now!" by Queen. Followed by "Today" by the Smashing Pumpkins.
"Todaaaaaaay, is the greatest day. That I have ever known"
They need to patch the 360 version. Fucking shit if you try using it through your DSL modem. Let's you connect with 1/100 users, although once you're connected you're fine. No other game completely goes to shit like that.

No, nothing crazy like that. The toughest missions are chase ones, and there aren't any strict conditions on those.
I hardly understand a word he says but who cares. We went to play darts and ended up holding off the bar against waves of police that streamed in until we were both hospitalized.
i remember watching my brother play it, he got the last car into the garage and the door closed in the last second. it doesn't register the car's presence until like a second after the door closes, though. mission failed.

I call them filler because they didn't add anything to the game or plot.
I'm referring specifically to the Elizabeta and Manny missions. They were pointless except for introducing you to Packie and Playboy X. Hell, Manny dies and you never hear from Elizabeta once you leave Bohan. Those missions were really unnecessary.
On a side note, people, post your "average car/bike speed". It's under "Vehicles" in the "Stats" section. I wanna compare. Mine's a lowly 37.17 MPH. I think it's because I spend so much time backing up, correcting course etc
I find overall the missions are much easier and less frustrating than previous GTAs. I do use a 360 controller though, at least for driving. The mouse and keyboard make shooting missions much easier. I beat the Three Leaf Clover on the first try, but it would have taken several trying to shoot with the sticks.

Mine's even lower than yours at 30.95mph... probably because I keep stealing Feroci's. I love that car. Especially in black.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

That's probably because it's the mission right before the coffee stand one that everyone used to freak out about.
I'm actually pretty glad I didn't make it a mission further.
Fuck. Repressed Memories. FUCKING COFFEE STANDS.
I played GTA3 to that point several times. I got past that point once.

Kenji gives the mission to you.

It makes me appreciate how deft Niko is at finding things that get on people's nerves and then using them against people when they annoy him.
