Bandwidth Allocation!

IS there any way I can make my router prioritize different types of traffic?

We have an old D-Link DI-713P and whenever someone is downloading or using youtube, its impossible to play online with our PS3. I was hoping that I could tell the router to prioritize UDP traffic over TCP/IP (although now that im thinking this through that could end up backfiring) traffic and hopefully that would create a situation where gaming needs get priority, but since they arent using as much bandwidth, normal browsing is possible.

Am I nuts? How would I go about doing something like this?

I'm not familiar with that particular router. You could see if you can flash it with dd-wrt or tomato, both of which can do quality of service, which can do what you are asking. Another option would be to find a cheap router that does support it, or possible build a linux box to do so.

dangit! I was hoping my router could use DD-WRT, but apparently they dont have a version compatible with my router! I guess it might be new router time.

On this same subject line. There is a way to set it up for your routre to cut the bandwidth usage of torrents when your doing other things, right?

I was home on leave about a month ago, and before I left I taught my dad how to use torrents so he could send me movies while over here. In doing so, I taught him how to use up all my bandwidth when I was trying to play games. :) I'm going to be staying at my parents for a few months when I get home, and I wanted to set up our router do give him like 20% bandwidth when Im gaming. ;)

Would said programs work for this also? I'm sure one of my 4 routres can use one of these 2.

Just set your Dad's torrent program to use 75% of your upload bandwidth at all times (do a speed test to check) and that should do it.

DD-WRT and Tomato can both do QoS also I think.
