RIP Sunny von Bulow

Don't know who she is? Well, you probably haven't met her, she's been in a coma for 28 years.
NEW YORK - Martha "Sunny" von Bulow, the heiress who spent the last 28 years of her life in a coma after what prosecutors alleged in a pair of sensational trials were two murder attempts by her husband, died Saturday at age 76.

She died at a nursing home in New York, her children said in a statement issued by family spokeswoman Maureen Connelly.

...

Her doctor testified that the cost of maintaining her was $375,000 the first year, 1981.

No figures were available for the years that followed, but by the early 1990s room charges were up to about $1,500 a day — $547,000 a year — plus $200,000 to $300,000 for round-the-clock private nursing.

article

Can you even imagine waking up from a coma that long? So much has changed in 28 years, that's longer than I've even BEEN ALIVE. That's like 4 Presidents.. then you gotta pay the medical bill when you wake up.

The article mentions the finances. So I assume someone is paying for it somewhere.

I wouldn't want to wake up after that long. 5-10 years would be horrifying but a novelty at least. 28 would be crippling, emotionally speaking.

I corrected my president math, long day at work.

Yeah, if she had woken up I don't know if she could've handled it emotionally. I sure as fuck couldn't.

but there have only been four presidents since she went into that coma

also how do they differentiate a coma from being braindead

When you are braindead all of your brain has lost function. People in comas only lose partial functionality, and still respond to stimulae such as senses and things like equilibrium.

Hook up some electrodes to a coma patient and cut off their foot and you will see electrical activity. A brain dead person will show no readings other than the base electrical signal of the system.

My grandfather died yesterday night. His health had been declining in the last month and when they took him to the hospital last night he passed. We're planning to hold his funeral next week so my cousin can finish his finals

I kind of wish my aunt wasn't being weird and would tell him that his grandfather has died but apparently it isn't my place to tell her how to raise her children

They hook your legs to machines that force them to contract when you have to be in bed for long periods of time.

This is to prevent clots and minimize atrophy best they can.

You would be weak as all hell, yes. But I doubt that you would be physically unable to move after waking up.

    After how long?

Because this is the point here. You could conceivably wake up at any second. Would you, as the family member, have the nerve to pull the plug knowing that there is a very real possibility that if you had just waited another day you would have woken up. People have woken up from extremely long comas with no sideeffects whatsoever, other than being thin and weak.
