Howdy there, just had a quick question: What's the best way to make sure my laptop is running at peak performance? I know about Ad-Aware and so on for that kind of thing, and I have "AntiVir" personal as my antivirus.
but is there anything in general that I should be doing with my computer that I've not? I defrag regularly.
A lot of people let their startup processes get out of hand, which is hampered by damn near every non-gaming piece of software thinking it's important enough to warrant having some sort of tool running all of the time. A lot of times it's just software that came with your printer or media player, but the cost in RAM and CPU cycles adds up after a while.
It's sort of a hamfisted way of checking, but you can click start, go to run, and type msconfig to get a look at which processes are running at startup. Google any that you're unfamiliar with and disable them if they aren't important.
Defragging regularly is important too, but you said you already do that.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and stop and disable everything nonessential.
It varies from user to user and computer to computer, but I'm guessing you could turn of Remote Registry, Smart Card, and Infrared to start. There's many guides you can google for that will give you an in-depth rundown of what you can disable.
