Laptopable goodness

I have found myself in a situation i'm sure many of you have experienced before. I've got a 24-ish hour flight coming up at the end of the week (London->Melbourne if anyone cares), which of course means sitting in an uncomfortable seat for hours on end, which of course means retro laptop gaming, woo!

I'm not necessarily asking for old games per-se, just games that will run on my lappy. For reference, my laptop has a pretty beefy processor, but not much in the way of a graphics card. It can handle pretty much any game that isn't full 3D up the arse. It will run Red Alert 2, but not C&C Generals for instance. Not at a playable framerate anyway...

Games I'm already bringing:

- Red Alert 2 + all the older C&Cs
- Baldur's Gate 2
- Icewind Dale 2
- Uplink
- Defcon

In addition, can anyone tell me how likely it is that i'll be able to charge my lappy somewhere in the airport when I make my connecting flight? I know for a fact the only plane that'll have laptop charging facilities in cattle-class is the very last one (Airbus A380, woo!), so i'll only get 2-3 hours tops before needing to recharge.

I imagine keyboard-only games would work well. Played through Cave Story yet? Within a Deep Forest? Knytt? Knytt Stories?

Sounds like a good opportunity to get into Dwarf Fortress.

Or Crawl for some lighter roguelike goodness.

And you can't go wrong with any of ol' Kenta Cho's games for shmups.

Will be bringing DF with me, but jesus that game EATS PROCESSORS. NOM NOM NOM. I guess a hermit fortress or sticking to my original 7 with no immigrants or something might work.

So... do you just not have a DS, or what? It seems to me that most PC games would wind up being frustrating without a mouse and the room to use it properly. Dwarf Fortress is a brilliant idea, granted.

My experience, though, has been that an airplane to anywhere, plus a DS and a handful of games, is not only pocket-sized, but also leads to, "Whoa, are we in Zimbabwe already?" :P

You can get the full version of NOX free these days, and it's just pure fun of the Diablo-clone variety. Decent length and three somewhat different campaigns, too, so it'll last you the return flight as well. Seriously, I can't recommend it enough, it's the perfect one-time-use game.

Your 24 hour flight will feel like 4. Easy to use with a trackpad, won't drain your battery. Very funny, simple game that you won't feel embarrassed playing on a plane. Unless you're flying 1st class in which case you can go fuck yourself.

I'd go with either SimGolf or Monopoly Tycoon - they are both brilliant games with a ton of replay value. Monopoly is in 3D, but very simple 3D that shouldn't be taxing on your system at all consider it runs on my wife's old laptop with integrated Intel 3d.

I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

In addition to Cave Story, I'd also like to mention La Mulana which I recently started playing. It's even more old school than Cave Story but I'm enjoying it just as much.

And if you don't mind non-free games there's a ton of stuff on Steam that has low system requirements that would easily run on your laptop and entertain the shit out of you.

I can't play any source games on my laptop, Portal included. I think for most laptop video cards (especially integrated ones) FPS graphics are just too much to handle. Hell, i need to set all my video settings to low to get BF 1942 to barely get 30 fps on mine.

Have you tried some of the earlier FPS games? I played through all of Quake and both of it's mission packs at work and all we have is shitty computers with 512 megs of RAM and integrated graphics. I also played through all of Heretic and Doom and I'm working on Doom 2 and Hexen.

FPS games would be a bad idea because, even if he had the beefiest laptop in the world, he'll be using it on a plane and there's just no room to use a mouse accurately there.

If you ever find a copy, one of the older You Don't Know Jack games would be great with a pair of headphones. The graphics are 99% text, it's all (hilarious) audio and trivia. Time will fly when you're playing them. *buh-dum-tish*

    Most games from GOG.com.

I'd recommend Jagged Alliance 2, Fallout 1 and 2. Unreal Tournament is still really fun for botmatch, especially if you can get some mods going, although it might be difficult to play without a mouse.

Also Freespace 2 if you can ask to borrow the pilots' joystick and throttle for a while. Be sure to pipe the video feed to all in-flight TV sets so that they can "ooh" and "aah" appreciatively when you pull off a particularly righteous intercept. They won't mind about the flight corkscrewing around as much.

24 hour plane journey is not enough time to play Galciv2. You'd need to fly to like the Moon to get the most out of that.
