S i am building a new pc and have just realized i will need a new xp disk (as i only have an upgrade disk atm). Will xp throw a fit if i simply put the old harddrive that contains only windows in my new pc? is there any other way (within forum rules)of avoiding paying out for antother version of xp just months before vista is released?
It will throw a fit, but you should be able to do a repair install to fix things. You need to prep first by setting the ide controller drivers to the generic ones from microsoft. There might be a couple of other critical drivers that need to be reset to their generic ones as well depending on your motherboad and the new motherboard. If you have an nt4, win98 or other cd around, you can pop it in and use it when the xp install asks for proof, or you can do a clean install of xp from the old hdd to a new one in a similar fashion. This is all above board as well since the old machine will no longer have a licensed version installed.
So i can install from the upgrade XP cd as long as i can find a 98 cd? will i be able to register XP? Will I have to install 98 then upgrade to XP or does the XP installer just ask me for the 98 cd at some point to check i have one?

Yep. And it will activate fine. It will ask, you pop it in, and then swap back after for the install. The upgrade is the full version that forces a check for a previous licensed cd.
