PC to TV

So I just got my first HDTV, and I'm connecting my computer to it via VGA since that's pretty much the only port my laptop has. I have an NVidia GeForce 8400, and it's currently set to clone. The only problem is, the resolution switches whenever I close the laptop. When it's open and the monitor is on, the laptop resolution doesn't match the screen size, but when it's closed, the resolution doesn't match the television screen size.

Does anyone know how to fix this so that the resolutions are correct on both displays, so I'm not either bleeding over the side of the display or losing out on part of the display to black bars?

Don't clone your display - this just duplicates the settings on one monitor to the other. Your laptop can use the TV as a second monitor. In Windows, right-click on the desktop, then select Properties. In display properties, select the rightmost tab, then click on the grayed out monitor, and check the box next to "Extend my desktop onto this monitor" and click apply. You can then set the TVs resolution separately from the laptop's.

So this kind of works, except the TV display becomes off by like half an inch to the right. Also, I kind of wanted my start menu to be on both screens, or at least on the TV while it's turned on.
