USB Flash Drive = Frozen PC

ZyreZyre Registered User regular
I have a simple problem that I cannot figure out for the life of me. Whenever I plug my flash drive into my newly repaired and freshly installed Windows XP SP3 system it locks that machine up.

I recently had another problem with the PC, after about a month of testing here and there when I had time and buying new parts I had found all 4 of my ram sticks were dead and new ram sticks with my new mobo/cpu fixed everything and its now a bootable machine. I bought a flash drive to back up files off my hard drive, plugged it in as a slave drive to my roommates PC and copied all I needed with no problems. My flash drive even works on all of the computers I use at work so I was able to back up files at work.

So now that I have my own personal rig up and running and want to restore the data off my flash drive to my PC I've run into the hinderance that whenever I plug the drive into my PC it causes my PC to freeze, lock-up, become unusable and I have to power down/reset the machine.

Any ideas on what's causing this? I've tried all available USB ports, I have other USB hardware (headset, cell phone hook up) that works fine. I've tried googling the problem but none of my searches have helped. I changed some of the USB Root Hub settings in Device Manager as one search suggested (that didnt work), installed a USB Flash Drive Moniter by Microsoft, that didn't help. The only other suggestions I've found say that; A: The Flash Drive or another component in my PC is defective. B: My flash Drive has Virus on it, or C: The voltages are off on my motherboard are off balance and the drive is trying to take too much power. (Just found this one tonight and will have to test tomorrow, because i have been playing with overclocking settings, getting my 2.5ghz dual core to run at 3.5ghz.)

Help!

Did you install the motherboard manufacturer's chipset drivers?
