So, I know that breakfast should be your largest meal of the day -- but I just don't have much of an appetite when I wake up. Wait, scratch that. I'm really really hungry when I wake up, but I can't stomach very much food. It's weird. I've had this problem since high school.
Right now, for instance, I cooked myself a cup of oatmeal and mixed it with some raisins and banana slices and i can only get half a bowl down me, and some tea and rice milk.
In normal conditions, I can pack away a lot of food at a meal. But I just feel queasy when I eat breakfast. Anyone know that's going on?
Right now I solve this problem by eating 2 breakfasts, spread out by about an hour or 2.
I also have this problem. When I eat breakfast soon after I get up, I have stomach issues after about half an hour. I know people don't have this much time, but I have to wait about an hour before I eat any sort of food.
Skipping meal altogether is bad. Overeating is bad. Eating smaller meals/snacks throughout the day instead of 3 large meals (or a combination thereof) is perfectly acceptable. There is nothing wrong with you.

You probably need more time between getting out of bed and eating. How much time is in between?
I take breakfast to work and eat about an hour after getting up, sometimes more like 90 minutes. This helps a lot. Additionally, it took me about 3 months to start to get up to a reasonable amount of food. I started with just a tub of yogurt.

I get out of bed and start making food immediately, because I'm so hungry. But once I get a few bites down I can't stomach any more, even though I'm still hungry.
There's not anything wrong with breaking up a bowl of oatmeal over the course of an hour or two so long as it tides you over til your next meal.
Not everyone wants to eat a big breakfast, skewing the caloric intake earlier in the day is a useful thing for weight control for those who've developed bad eating habits, but there's nothing inherently more "healthy" about it.
If you want more calories in the morning but can't stomach it, try more calorie-dense food (eggs/meat).
I've been the same way for years. Recently however, I've started working out a lot more and it's upping my appetite so i'm actually able to eat first thing in the morning. Seems like it's just a matter of getting my body used to it again.
Adding on to the comments made by the posts above me, I too have had this exact problem since at least high school. I've pretty much accepted it and eat a small breakfast here and there when my stomache permits it. Somthing like maybe a poptart or a muffin, anything to fill the void really and get me going. It takes a tremendous occasion to actually get me to eat something fried or cooked in the morning let alone stand the smell of it all.
Now come lunch time you better believe I scarf a whole value meal for kicks.
+1 to the "I don't really eat breakfast" crew. I'll have the morning tea, pack some snacks and eat them through the morning - piece of fruit, muffin, yogurt. I'm not a fan of large meals in general, but I'd just never been much for breakfast.

That's a shame.
My favorite breakfast(food ever) is eggs benedict, bacon or ham, some good OJ, toast or a bagel with some creamcheese and jam

Believe me that sounds incredible and is often my main choice as brunch items coincidentally.
Getting on point, I'm not entirely sure about this but I do remember reading about bacteria build up in your mouth overnight. Along with the whole not being able to eat breakfast thing I often have pretty bad stomache issues in the morning as well which are possibly caused by stress or (an unconfirmed theory) bacteria in the mouth. Pretty much bacteria develops from the meals of the previous day over night which is then ingested by swallowing and causes irritation and nausea in the morning. I figured this could be solved brushing nightly before bed which has since worked fine for me since high school.

Oh I got out of that bad habit loooooong ago but I actually do know people who don't brush at night who say they see it as an "inconveniance" or they just don't have time.

Ew. I can't not brush my teeth before bed. Though sometimes I'll slip, but the cause is usually alcohol induced rapid onset sleep.
I get out of bed and start making food immediately, because I'm so hungry. But once I get a few bites down I can't stomach any more, even though I'm still hungry.
Something might be affecting your digestion at night, or it could be something like acid reflux. You might want to talk to your doctor just for advice.
I am one of those millions of uninsured Americans you hear about on the news =/
When I postpone a meal for over 6 hours, my stomach stops being hungry. And then, later, I'm really hungry but I can't keep food down easily. I think that might be happening overnight. Maybe I'll start eating a big meal right before I fall asleep and see if I can stomach food the next morning.
Really this is just an excuse for prolific midnight snacking.

I have a similar problem, but only with certain foods. I can have oatmeal or toast 10 minutes after waking up with no problem. Cereal with milk is somewhat iffy; sometimes I get an upset stomach, sometimes I'm fine. Bananas will always give me stomach cramps if I eat them before about 10 AM.
I wouldn't recommend a big meal right before bed, in fact I wouldn't recommend eating anything past 6-8. Unless weight isn't an issue then eating before bed can really screw with your metabolism and furthermore your food doesn't digest properly while sleeping because your metabolism goes down when you sleep.
Not eating breakfast is dumb and eating a big breakfast is a good idea. That being said, you can't just leap straight from no-breakfast to eating 5 eggs and half a loaf of toast. Take small steps and gradually increase the size of your breakfast until you are eating a good size one. In the beginning, perhaps only a slice of toast and an egg. In a few weeks, once this is a comfortable meal, two eggs. I use to only eat tiny breakfasts, if I had one at all, and I can now gobble down 6 eggs when putting on weight.
Eating right before bed is fine, does not mess with your metabolism and the food digests perfectly fine while sleeping. I mean, one of your body's favourite downtime activities is starting to break down what's in your stomach. The "don't eat before 6-8" rule is not based on science.
Your body is your body. If a big breakfast is not your thing, don't force it. The nutritionalists say a different thing every year, anyway.
No, the advantages of having a big breakfast are pretty clear and while everyone is a beautiful and unique snowflake, we're still all the same species and the mechanisms of our metabolism are pretty much identical. You may have to get your body used to consuming food as soon as you wake up, but once you're used to it it's clearly superior to not eating breakfast/having a tiny breakfast.

Outside of assisting in losing weight and appetite control, is there some research out there indicating that having a significant portion of your calories taken early in your workday is "better" for you then not?

Forcing food you don't want down yourself cannot be a good idea, unless you are actually diabetic or something. Skipping breakfast may be a bad idea, but the OP likes a light breakfast, so where's the harm in that?

Because studies for the last 20 years have shown that eating a large breakfast boosts your metabolism and stops mid morning hunger pains and is generally the best thing you can do with yourself in terms of food.
To the OP I have the same problem, often I'll want to vomit after breakfast (and I have done in the past but not for the past two years) when I talked to my doctor about it he thought I might have an ulcer but the blood tests didn't show anything. My advice would be do some other morning activities before breakfast like have a shower or make breakfast, give your stomach a little more wake up time but try and have a big breakfast.

This is operating under the assumption that Joe is of average build (moderate levels of body fat, decent physical shape, no outstanding health conditions), in which case boosting your metabolism by taking in a good portion of your daily food in the morning would be ideal. So, in that sense, assisting in losing weight and controlling your appetite is beneficial to your overall health. If Joe is an 80lbs anemic with a heart condition, he can hardly expect general health advice to be of any use to him and should state these exceptions in the OP.
Having a good breakfast also means more maintained energy through the morning. You break down a balanced breakfast and use the components in such a way that you'll have higher amounts of working energy for a longer period that if you have no breakfast/a poorly balanced or small breakfast (which means lower energy levels and reliance on caffeine/sugar for energy spikes), leading to better performance and general mood (if he's anything like me) in whatever you do post-breakfast than if you eat a shitty or non-existent breakfast.
There's no specific harm in eating a smaller breakfast, but eating a larger breakfast would be beneficial - so it may be something he may want to work towards. Also consider that the make-up of what most consider a small breakfast (toast and coffee, sugary cereal) is nutritionally worse for you compared to what most people consider larger breakfasts (eggs and toast, oatmeal and fruit).
Actually, looking at the OP again, the idea of breaking breakfast into two meals spread apart by an hour or two is a great idea. Keep doing that. You still may want to work towards those two meals containing a higher % of your daily caloric intake, as I described in my last post.
Normally i try and drink something as soon as i get up, like a big glass of milo (or whatever the american version is). Seems that after the liquid and the time it takes to get mostly ready/prepare breakfast I'm all good.
Yeah I have to skip breakfast most of the time, usually I try to have a meal replacement shake but its hard. I to feel like Im hungry but get queasy. Mine if from my anxiety though and it sucks.
I'm not sure if your a nervous person or yeah anything like that, but that is what causes my problems.
I'm actually going to a doctor about it once I finish exams. I notice I'm a bit better when I have nothing planned for the day when I get up like school.
I waited an hour after waking up today to eat breakfast. All it's done is made me much hungrier when I start eating -- but I'm still queasy and can't eat more than a few spoonfuls.
But I have a job interview in a few hours so maybe it's just nerves.
Have a piece of fruit when you first wake up, go about your morning routine, and have a larger breakfast after. If you don't finish the fruit, you can chop the leftover bit into the breakfast.
I had this problem for a long time. Even if I was hungry my stomach just didn't feel like it would tolerate any food.
Start with small and bland food and work your way up.
Start with a piece of toast, and some orange juice or coffee. After eating breakfast regularly for long enough you'll be able to handle more, and you'll start wanting to eat more.

If you want to do the big breakfast thing (which is good. It kicks your metabolism into burning gear right from the start, and is great for weight loss/control) try staging your cooking/eating phases.
Meaning take your whole breakfast (I usually have 3 scrambled eggs, 2 links of turkey sausage or bacon, wheat toast and orange juice) and cook one part, eat it, then cook the next part. You'll feel fuller and get your awesome big breakfast.
