Weird RAM problem

Ok, so I just got a third gig of ram, 2 512 sticks, and added them to my computer. Corsair XM2 brand, same as I've got in there but only one gig total instead of the current two that I've been using. Dual-channel. Matched sticks for both pairs. Vista 32 bit. DDR2 660 I believe on he new sticks, 800 on the old.

Except when I turn the computer on, the little Windows loading bar thing shows up, then freezes. Well of course I go through the logical next steps, and check each stick and each slot. Both sticks are fine, both slots are fine. No problem there. Well next, I remember that I have a TV input that when plugged into the cable has once before given me problems on startup. Also I figure, why not just unplug everything. So I unplug everything not the Keyboard or Mouse, and the same thing happens. So I try safe mode, and it boots fine into safe mode, but for a while it looked like it was going to have the same problem, stopping after "Loaded \windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys"

Anyways, specs, if that makes a difference:
Mobo: Asus something... supports up to 8 GB of RAM
CPU: Intel Q6600
GPU: 8800GT
HDD: Two internal 750 GB
RAM: Corsair XM2 DDR2 800 2GB, Corsaid XM2 DDR2 600 1GB
Monitors: Acer 22" LCD, Proview 17" CRT

On your ASUS mother board are all RAM slots the same? I remember on my old ASUS board there were different kinds of RAM slots for different speeds or something. So how many sticks have you got in there right now 4? 2x1G + 2x512mB ? I know, this doesn't sound very helpful.

Right now I've got 2x1GB that works, and trying to add 2x512. There are two yellow slots, which the 1GB are in, and 2 red slots, which I was putting the 512MBs in.

Tried changing the 1gb sticks to the red slots and the 512mb's to the yellow slots? Sometimes mobo's are just hugely finicky about RAM. I had issue doing exactly what you're doing for a friends machine when I gave him a couple spare 1gb sticks I had lying around (on an asus p5-whatever) trying to add it to his 512x2 configuration. Unfortunately the sticks just weren't compatible with each other and no amount of voltage tweaking or slot changing could get them to work at the same time.

Not yet. I'll try it tomorrow once I'm not drunk and performing, thanks. I considered that as I was out... stupid motherboard

Tried it, nothing doing. With the positions switched it didn't even get to the BIOS spalsh and the CPU fan didn't even start. Taking the 2 new sticks out and leaving the pre-existing 2 sticks and it's back to working just fine.
