Paypal Suspicion Rising...

I am planning to purchase a product from an online store, but it only accepts paypal. So now I'm forced to sign up. Before I do, however, I want to know a couple things the site is very vague about. Do "personal" accounts have any fees associated with it? If I just want to buy things, will a new fee jump out and eat my face and wallet? If so I would like to know.

All help Is much appreciated.

There's no fees associated with a personal account, besides the $0.15 or whatever it is they debit from your checking account to verify it.

Buyers don't pay any fees, and you can *probably* make a one-time credit card payment via Paypal without an account (contact the store to see if they accept payments from non-members). No sweat. Paypal's bad rap comes from how they deal with sellers, not buyers.

Indeed. You'll be fine buying. Paypal can be very useful when they're not screwing you over the table.

I pinky swear that we will not screw you.

They don't debit the money out of your account, they give you the $0.15.

Even selling isn't that bad, just rememeber..

*EVERYTHING* you do needs to be logged and verified. So everything requires a signer, everything has a tracking #, every email, every letter, etc... has to be recorded.

No phone calls, no wiring, no meeting in real life, nothing. Records, records, records. That simple. Also, be sure to be *very* exact in what you sell. Do not use adjectives like "Small dent!" just say "dent."

Yeah, it really, really is. I'm currently locked out of my premier account (and all of the payments I've received in the past month) because I made the "mistake" of logging into my account while I was in Canada, and I'm looking at not having access again until after the holidays because they're taking DAYS to even send out the information I need to even initiate the account recovery process. There have also been a couple of different H/A threads in recent months where sellers have done *everything* right and are still wrapped up in months-long ordeals with hundreds of dollars (or more) entangled in Paypal's messy, arbitrary shenanigans. Any opportunity to stress that "selling through Paypal should be avoided at all costs" is worth taking.

Not to jump down your throat personally or anything, it's just that there are pretty much two kinds of Paypal sellers; those who have been screwed over, and those who will be.

See my thread if you want confirmation of this. I will NEVER use PayPal for selling again.

Yeah, I don't know why people think that PayPal is more secure than, say, a personal check. In fact, it's far riskier from a seller's standpoint.

As a buyer, I've found it remarkably fast and secure. I used it extensively as a seller as well, with something around 50-100 sales completed without hassle using it, however those were conducted several years ago, so perhaps things have changed on that end.

It's fast. On the whole, that's the only advantage. It shifts some risk from the buyer to the seller, but that's not more secure. It's just moving risk around.
