Alt, just in case the person I'm gifting this too lurks PA.
Like the title says, I'm trying to think of stuff to give a big Douglas Adam fan. I discovered the only book of his they haven't read, so I'll get that, and probably some of the audio recordings they have. Anything else I could throw in? Trinkets, or bigger stuff, I want to make it an Adam's theme basket of present.
I think think geek has a towel with 42 on it. I'd post a link but its blocked at work.
Hah, the first thing I thought of when I saw the title was a towel too. The particular one from Thinkgeek is here, though.
I was going to suggest maybe a small Babelfish, but Google seems to indicate they don't exist (toys, I mean). Maybe if you found a small plush yellow fish to pass off as one?
Audio book sets, or the old British radio shows. Most of the book stores in my area have a very nice single-volume book with the entire Hitchhiker's Guide series plus a short story about Zaphod - even though I have all the books, that one's always tempted me. I don't see them nearly enough in stores, but the Dirk Gently series.
There was also the old Starship Titanic game if you can find it. Never played it or heard anything about it except a couple ads in PC Gamer back in 1998 or so, but it was designed by Douglas Adams. There's a Starship Titanic novel based on the game by Terry Jones which I also haven't read, but it does tie into the theme.
they have that book already. I thought of a towel, but didn't realize they made some with a Hitchhiker's refence already on them. And the fish plushie is a neat idea too.
The Meaning of Liff is kind of a silly Farmer's Almanac (it's a satire OF a Farmer's Almanac if I recall correctly which is like a double-satire) but I found it funny.
If he/she has this book already or this is the book you are referring to, then I apologize for wasting your time.
called Last Chance To See which I think is actually a geography book, but I never read it, so I don't know anything about it. He cowrote this one with Mark Carwardine.
Last Chance to See was a documentary if I remember rightly. It was about animals that were soon to be extinct. Stephen Fry recently went to Africa to record for part of an updated series, not too sure what they found.
The BBC also did a recent (wow, actually, this was four years ago now, fuck) radio dramatisation of the later Guide books which he may not have.

Last Chance to See is indeed an excellent book. So is the out-of-print collection of the complete Hitchhiker's radio scripts. I can also recommend this book of essays about the series.
He'd probably like Adams' computer games: Hitchhiker's Guide, Bureaucracy, and Starship Titanic. If you can find boxed copies of the Infocom games (HHGTTG and Bureaucracy) they came with all sorts of awesome crap in the box. Starship Titanic sucks balls, but if he's a big Adams fan he'll still enjoy it.
I'm sure they released all sorts of merch to coincide with the recent movie if you look around.
I saw a lecture by Adams shortly before he died, and he basically talked about Last Chance to See. He said it was his favorite books of his and so of course it sold the worst. Basically he traveled the world with a photographer trying to get snapshots of endangered species. Definitely worth it.

If you want to go more obscure, Adams wrote several Dr Who stories back in the 70s, two of which he then blended together to create the first Dirk Gently book. Try looking for City of Death.
I'd also like to chime in on Last Chance to See, which is hillarious while dealing with rather sad or depressing subject matter (focusing on endangered species).
The pages on trying to waterproof a microphone in China is particularly funny.

If you're going to get someone a towel, by the way, I recommend getting a real, normal towel, not a gifty one. But a super awesome, "This is my favorite towel forever and ever, it's so amazing" towel, which you then present to them in a grandiose way.

The only danger there is that they might think it's just a towel, and not an Adams reference. Although a guess a note saying 'make sure you always know where it is' would work.

That's what I mean by grandiose presentation. Heck, you could also have a case of beer, then demand that they grab the towel and start drinking.

The only appropriate thing to do is soak one corner in barbecue sauce, another in liquified wheat germ, and another in anti-depressants.

And another in tea, and another in the remains of a pan-galactic gargle-blaster (you don't want the full effects.)
But that would require a towel that has at least one corner permanently stuck in a spatial distortion field that's linked to one of the plural zones.
This . It's great. When I was in high school my teacher let me borrow the video tapes of it...so when I found out it was on DVD I had to buy them. Very cheesy, but also very funny if you like the books.

How many Dirk Gently books were there? I see that amazon actually has a couple in stock. I have been wanting to pick them up for a while now and it would be nice to have all of them

I believe there were only two, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.

That is correct. Salmon of Doubt contains parts from an unpublished one (which I think is where the entire book takes its name from).

He co-wrote it with John Lloyd, which is why it may not have shown up. There's also this book:
