Metal

How wrong would I be if I said Metal is basically the culmination of all misguided, overindulgent and fundamentally bad/un-artistic aspects of music?

What would be a more worthy genre, then?

I'd say art appreciation is a matter of opinion/personal taste, and if you don't like metal then just don't listen to it.

I'd be hesitant to lump Black Sabbath in. They made bad stuff after Ozzy, and Ozzy made plenty of bad stuff but early Sabbath is good hard rock. There are many popular metal songs that are more hard rock than metal.

Metal seems to be the point at which they lose contact with any aesthetic sensibility, or redefine their aesthetic philosophy to treating their instruments like weights that are too light for them, but they are on steroids/jager/a like minded mob so NOTHING MATTERS

Punk-Rock tried to kill the metal but they failed, as they were smitten to the ground. New-wave tried to kill the metal but they failed, as they were striken down to the ground. Grunge tried to kill the metal. They failed, as they were thrown to the ground. Techno tried to defile the metal, but techno was proven wrong.
I mean, that's an impressive list of victories. Except for grunge. But it appears we are going to end up disagreeing.

I pretty much hatet he stuff, but I'm not a big music guy.

I find it's only worth is that anyone can come up with a gimmick as a band and it's a new genre of metal.

Like viking metal. That's some funny shit.

I don't even like metal because I find most of it silly/boring, but I am tired of people complaining that music is "overindulgent". What does that even mean? Why should musicians say "You know, I'd really like to do this, but I don't think that would sell many albums, so forget it"?

And "fundamentally bad" is another long, ultimately pointless conversation as well.

Considering the wealth of great metal bands out there now that the genre is viable, I would say that the OP is not only wrong, but stupidly wrong.

I'd also like to know what musicians/bands the OP listens to, so he can be properly ridiculed.

I provided the fact that I knew of many guys who were a) dirty racists b) metalheads.

And you were like I don't.

Your annecdotal evidence doesn't counter mine imo. We don't subtract the number of non-racist metal guys from the number of racist metal guys and then be like look at how tolerant we are.

I mean shit of course most metal fans aren't racist and shit but imo there's a worrying racist subculture there.

Yeah rap is just 'doof doof beep boop' with some black guy talking fast about how he shoots people and is a gangster, all techno is variations on Sandstorm, all blues is about drinking, all country is about your girl leaving you.

OP is stupid and so wrong that it's painful. Not to mention the fact that metal is a very diverse genre (hey guess what there are whole subgenres without screaming/growling vocals! no way!)

As a guy who spends a lot of time going to metal shows and hanging out with metalheads i've encountered very little racism. However I am aware that I should probably not show up at some socialist black metal shows. Keeping that in mind I challenge you to provide a genre that has not been polluted by racist artist at some point.

    You know, with vocals.

(edit: also my argument counters yours perfectly since it's a flawed argument to begin with.)

Duki are you trying to say that this is a problem with metal or something? The example that springs to mind is Arghoslent, they are a very racist death metal band who would probably be very big if they sang about rainbows and sunshine (or just satan), but the fact that their lyrics often talk about the inferiority of africans and slavery, they have very little support except from idiots who need to look to someone else to affirm their views.

NSBM (national socialist black metal) is a whole other kettle of fish that I don't really know enough about to discuss, but I'll let the guy from Summoning do it for me.

e: Oh shit, forgot how big that thing was and the use of the N word.

fairly long discussion about why nazism doesn't fit in with metal, including 2 uses of the N word
