So I applied the latest batch o patches from MS on Thursday, and didn't use my compy until this morning. I turn it on to find out that it won't let me log in. It goes through the whole boot process successfully, but when XP finishes loading, I get the blank desktop screen and my mouse cursor, but the login box doesn't appear (I use the old-style login screen). The mouse can be moved, but it never loads. It doesn't respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL. I get the same behavior in Safe Mode, only with the black safemode background. Anybdoy know what causes this? Also, I think I may have disabled system restore a few weeks ago when I was scrounging for some temporary HD space. My new HDs got here yesterday If system restore is enabled, will it always give me the system restore message when it boots? or do I need to press some key while it is loading? Is there any file I can copy over from the install cd via the recovery console to fix this?

Uhm... right now I'd say try booting off a liveCD, but I can't think of anything right now that wouldn't require a reformat.

It sounds like something is preventing explorer from loading properly, but usually to fix that you just use CTRL-ALT-DEL... Hmm....
