Finding Houseing in Annapolis, MD

I just had a job interview in Annapolis, and am fairly confident I'm going to get the job. If I do secure it, I'll be starting pretty soon after the new year and since I currently live a 2+ hour drive away, I'll need to relocate rather quickly, and since it's a one-year contract, I'm renting rather than buying. I'm already looking at craigslist, and realtor.com but if there's anyone out there with direct experience with that part of the region, I'd love to hear your advice.

As well, a couple questions I suppose it'd be good to get answers to: Is there a 'bad' side of town I probably want to avoid living in? How about a good side? Are Navy cadets going to kick my ass when I wear the ARMY shirt my girlfriend got me while she was in basic?

I just got done finding a place in Baltimore, and my company gets relocation agents that explain the area. From what I understand Annapolis is pretty nice, and that you should be able to spot any bad areas pretty obviously. I guess the question to know is, are you going to get to a trip to look for a place before you start work, so that you can familiarize yourself with the place? Also, once you get the job, ASK YOUR COWORKERS/SUPERVISOR.

I did, and he lives out in Silver Springs. The city looks pretty nice in general, although I did see a guy repeatedly bludgeon an SUV with his station wagon to get out of a parallel parking space. :P

I'm not going to get many chances to check it out further due to general holiday madness before the job is supposed to start, so I was figuring I'd try lining up four, a half dozen likely prospects and arrange to see them all on the same day, and make my decision then.

This is what I did. I lined up six appointments on Criagslist and visited them on the 3-5 weekend of this month. I did different price areas, in the two areas I was interested in living in. I made the decision based on the guys I'd be living with (I prefer multiple roommates), the quality of the neighborhood (especially important in Baltimore), and the perceived quality of the house. I tried some cheaper areas and wasn't too impressed.

By the way, I don't have personal experience yet, but people are telling me that parallel parking thing is common. It's supposedly like a given some people are gonna hit your bumpers moving around and stuff. Oh well...

Annapolis is pretty posh; i don't know of any "bad areas" off the top of my head. The Navy grounds are also very, very large, so a lot of activities stay within the base, including rowdiness during sporting events.
