PC strategy games with hotseat play?

Every Christmas the family will sit down and do their thing while my father and I will sit on the couch with a laptop playing Civ 4 in hotseat mode trying to forget about the pain of family life and keep ourselves out of the womanly chatter that goes on all around us.

We want to try something else now but don't know what supports single machine hotseat play. We want a slower turn based style game that can keep us occupied, the only example I have now is Civ 4 since that's what we play. As in we don't want to play Worms as that requires too much action and quick movements.

What should we try this year?

Alpha Centauri, and its expansion pack, Alien Crossfire.

Those are the only games you will ever need.

It's quite old but Age of Wonders is great for hotseat. I imagine the Heroes of Might & Magic games are, too.

Yes, Heroes of Might & Magic is excellent for hotseat.

Yeah, Heroes of Might & Magic 5 is a good choice, especially because it doesn't matter too much if the other guy peeks at the screen after a while. You'll both get just as much information in your own turns as you will sitting across the room looking at the screen.

Also, on a bigger map, you both won't encounter each other for potentially hours.

Believe it or not, Medieval II.

    I'm serious, quit laughing.

The latest patches/Kingdoms adds a hotseat mode which is pretty cool.

How does that work for the battles though?

Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

    Also there is:

Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

    It also has the add-ons:

Heroes of Might and Magic 3: Armageddon's Blade and Heroes of Might and Magic 3: The Shadow of Death.

It's really the go to game, seriously!

I love me some HoMM3, but where can a fellow even buy it anymore? Has it been released to Steam or something recently and I was unaware?

Battle for Wesnoth, and Worms Armageddon. Both awesome, and Wesnoth is free.

    For instance: http://www.amazon.com/Heroes-Might-Magic-3-Complete-Pc/dp/B00004YKX4

And you know that's at least 1,000 hours of gameplay for $23.99.

I used to play hotseat Civ2 and MOO2 with friends. Alpha Centauri would probably be even cooler though. Space Empires IV and V probably have hotseat mode. I don't really know how good they are though.

I always wanted to play a PBEM of the SE games.

HoMM 3 is often considered the best HoMM game. I've only played 3 so I can't compare it, but it's really good.

Just had to chime in here with a game from the dudes who made X-com.

    Laser Squad Nemesis.

Been a while since I've played it, but I believe you can hotseat as the space marines in the free download.
One of the best turn-based tactical games I've ever played, and certainly the best with hotseat and PBEM.

HoMM 5 may not be better than 3, but it is a worthy successor and is available on Steam. 4 is terrible.

Anyone know if any historical simulation games have this mode or is it mostly fantasy games?
