Retro Game Challenge trailer
From the
Official US site, which just recently opened:
So this is apparently coming to the States a lot sooner than I thought: The new trailer on the US site says February, but Nintendo published a Q1 games release list saying this was actually dropping on Jan. 6. Which would be awesome.
Retro Game Challenge is ... strange. The hook is that you're thrown back in time into an alternate reality 1980s, playing "new" 8-bit video games that are fictional knockoffs of existing 8-bit classics like Dragon Warrior and Ninja Gaiden. In the game, the demon Arino, who sent you back in time, forces you to finish a set number of challenges for each game: So for the first game, Cosmic Gate (aka Galaga), one of the challenges is to reach a certain stage, hit certain warp zones or score a certain top score. Once you finish all of the challenges, you unlock the second game, and so on.
The retro nostalgia kicks in, not only by the game design, but also because the '80s kid version of you can leaf through the games' instruction manuals and other gaming magazines (the mag is actually called "Game Fan Magazine") to find tips and tricks for beating the games. You'll also be playing the games alongside the kid version of Arino, who will cheer you on or buy magazines for the two of you to pore over together.
The game is total kitsch, but it's so alluringly strange that I know I'm going to buy it. Who else is in?

I just hope it retains the insane level of difficulty of some of those amazing 80's era games. If they dumb this down for today's "casual gamer," heads will roll.
Ha, they copied some of that stuff wholesale. And I don't care! Imitation is the best form of flattery.
and the "demon game master" looks like a lot like Miyamoto.
It certainly looks based on Game Center CX, down to the name of the "demon" being that of the show's host.
That and both are owned by Fuji Television.

Getting this game for sure!
And yeah, this just needs to be mindrapingly hard.
Well, and the Japanese in the video saying, "Game Center CX: something I can't read".
But I will buy the localized version, gladly play everything up to Guadia Quest again, and finally finish the last two games.
Yes, it's as fun/awesome as it looks. Yes, sometimes the games kick you in the genitals, old school. The rally game will make you wish there was a way to throw controllers in the virtual living room on the bottom screen.
And it has a great sense of humor. For example, the second rally game is just the old one, with a pallette swap, and a sponsor attached to it. The challenges to advance to the next game are different, so they can make the joke while avoiding redundant objectives.
Truly great stuff. If you have a DS and any affection for retro gaming, do not miss this.
Sorry about the back to back posts, I meant to answer this.
All of the games are complete, but at first they are presented with mini-game like challenges (beat the 2nd boss, get to level three without dying, etc.). Complete four challenges to unlock the next game. After the challenges are complete, each game can be played to be completion. In fact, finishing each game is the final challenge.
it says winter 08. I'm guessing, Winter 08 in Japan? Any western release planned?

I want it. Give me that game! Now!
It came out in Japan in 2007. Wiki says the US release was pushed into early 2009, and a Japanese sequel is due out in February.

X-Seed is bringing it over, amazon says in February.
X-Seed is pretty awesome lately, with this, the Korg DS-10 and Populous DS (which im assuming is cool because populous is cool, but i havent actually looked at the new DS version specifically).
edit: plus it looks like they brought over the last Shadow Hearts game and the last couple Wild Arms games too. go xseed!
Yeah, I should make it clearer; the YouTube video is from this past E3 and based on the Japanese version, which already came out quite a few months ago. The US version is coming over in January or February '09 ... and, frankly, I'm stunned that this is getting localized at all. This is the biggest surprise since Ouendan became EBA.
Nah, I don't think anything will ever top Seaman being localized. Hell, just typing that it happened surprised me all over again.

I definitely want this game-- but do I dare splurge when it comes out, though? There is so much else I have to play...
Like Mega Man Legends? Then check out my story, Legends of the Halcyon Era - An Adventure in the World of Mega Man Legends on TMMN and AO3!
This is going to be an awesome Spring between everything that's coming out.

This makes me so sad...
FEAR THE GAMES MASTER
Yeah, but, that's ship date, and probably for the majority of us, this won't hit shelves 'til Wednesday (day after tomorrow)
I know I can't wait either
