A Thief's Path, older animation work

So a long time ago (beginning of 2005) I was putting together a thief-based film, animated in the style of the aforementioned games cutscenes. I put together a trailer, and finished the first 2 and 1/2 minutes of footage for it, but then decided that what I was working on wasn't worth it, as it was based on someone elses IP and concepts, (also, the script wasn't that great in retrospect) but it was a excellent learning experience, especially as I'm now beginning my career as a writer/director/producer (shooting shorts and music videos on 35mm, s16, and HD video, with a feature planned for the near future)

Here's the link to watch the trailer at the A Thief's Path site, as well as a youtube link to it.

And here's the first 2 & 1/2 minutes of footage from the film, roughly 2 months of work, starting from scratch.

I'll probably put up a proper link to it on the ATP site when I have a break from working on real-world films for long enough to relaunch my website (3 months late and counting... :?)

It uses the excellent video codec Xvid, so you'll have to download the codec for that from here first, I'll probably put it up on youtube soon as well.

There's no sound on the footage, so don't worry about turning it up.

Credits for this footage remains the same as the trailer.

Comments/crits are welcome as usual.

Wait, you're working on the Darkmod!! I'm on the forums there! I'll be applying for a beta mapper soon!

Ok, my comments: the whole goddamn thing is really good, my biggest problem was the lack of many sound effects (that were a very strong part of the original), and the flashing images at the beginning are a bit to short. They should be long enough to almost fully grasp what's going on on them.

Goddamnit, how come I didn't relate you to the guy on TDM forums is beyond my reason.

I don't know much about animation, but the only thing that really put me off was the difference between the close-up shots and the distant silhouettes. The silhouettes were very dynamic and moved well, but the close-ups didn't move at all.

thats because the silhouettes were live action and the animation was mostly just still shots being pushed around.

the storytelling and direction is pretty good, but overall the execution is really lame and cheesy. decide on whether its going to be live action or animation first. if youre going to do animation, actually animate or get someone who can. dont just move around still images.

Hey Mayday, nice to see antoher Darkmodder around here :)

This work is pretty old. My real world and film school experience has really helped me understand proper animation and cinematography. I'm set to do animation work for the Darkmod in the future, with the first public release of any maps or campaigns, whener that may be. Be assured that anything I do for that will look 100 times better than this stuff.

Feel free to check out any of my other work too, though all of it is 2+ years old at this point. I'm relaunching my site once I get my current film work transferred to video.

Animation is hard and long work.

This isn't animation. What you have here is just a bunch of things sliding around.

Technically he never said this particular piece was animation.

Thank you for pointing that out in a civilized manner.

To stay on topic, I rather liked this *animation*, although it's influenced through my love for the Thief series. If you ever redid it though...no more Shine.

If both downloadable versions have the same quality... why would you offer one that's 10Mb and 5Mb?

Because divx is more commonly used, and some people are bothered about having to install another codec on their comp to play videos.

Wakkawa, I certainly did animate and put a lot of hard work into this. I had to create every frame of the lighting, as well as all the elements of the scene to assemble together. It may not be completely traditional animation, but that's not really the point of it.

You should really make more emphasis on which one uses which. The diffrence is marked by a single letter in tiny-tiny fonts.
