bullet points:
-game is $9.99 on PSN.
-12 players online.
plays like soldat. for those who haven't played something like this, think 2D tribes. if you haven't played tribes, think 2D quake with jetpacks.
controls --
-move - left stick
-aim - right stick
-shoot - R1
-jetpack - L1
-roll - down + L1
-use explosive - R2
-reload - O
-toggle between primary/secondary weapon - square
-suicide - select
primary weapons --
-machine gun: solid at any range, especially if you can master the lob.
-shotgun: can kill in one shot at close ranges -- not nearly as effective far off.
-sniper rifle: long downtime between shots, but if you can aim, this can be very effective. one hit kill unless they have a vest.
-rocket launcher: one hit kill (w/o vest). self explanatory. good timing can make this work great. splash damage isn't necessarily reliable -- you'll want to go for direct hits. great against vehicles.
-grenade launcher: my personal favorite. one hit kill (w/o vest) on direct hit. very flexible weapon -- especially on objective based maps.
-CAB: a solid laser with very long range and a constant dmg rate. personally this is my least favorite weapon, but i've seen some people use it well.
side arms --
-gun: this is the pistol. since i usually use grenade launcher, this is my side arm of choice -- takes care of land mines and isn't a bad alternative when you want/need to save ammo.
-knife: i'll edit this when i use it more.
explosives --
-hand grenades: you can throw these while flying/falling. great if used intelligently. my pick for deathmatch modes.
-C4: i'll edit this when i use it more
-mine: my personal favorite for objective based maps on offense and defense. use them to protect terminals/control panels while on defense, but they work even better if you use them to protect a planted bomb (they'll be in a hurry to defuse it). can also give yourself a bit of protection while you're busy hacking a terminal.
stationary weapons --
-turret gun: enter the turret and fire at the other layer. VERY deadly. usually overlooks a pretty important area of the map.
-RC rocket: enter it and it'll protect you while you fly around a rocket. the rocket isn't very fast, but it does quite a bit of damage. throw it into a group of people for a nice combo.
powerup weapons --
-gatling gun: hold the button down for lots of bullets. very effective.
-laser cannon: fires huge blue laser balls. takes like 2-3 hits to kill. very effective.
pick ups --
-armor (yellow vest): gives you armor. basically means you have two life bars. very useful
-super armor (red vest with helmet): more armor
-explosives (green bomb icon): gives you more explosives
-ammo (yellow bullets): more ammo
survival bonuses --
-regenerating health (red): you get HP back over time
-speed increase (green): you move around faster
-roll upgrade (yellow): you now roll faster AND do good damage (i usually get this one first)
game modes --
Sabotage:
-Attackers plant bombs on control panels. Up to two can be going at once, but one person can only plant one bomb at a time. As the attackers successfully bomb sets of control panels, the next set of control panels will open up.
Espionage:
-Attackers need to hack the data at the terminal and take the data back to home base. Each terminal has two bits of data -- you can abort download after the first and you will keep it, but one will still be in the terminal. If the person with data dies, the data is instantly returned to the terminal (it does not drop) so it is very important to PROTECT the data carrier.
in both objective based modes, it is important to know the map layout and where the powerups are.
some tips:
-hold downward while boosting to roll -- this is great for traveling fast and dodging enemy fire. this gets boosted with the orange/yellow powerup.
-use pistol (switch with square) to take out land mines if your primary can't
-for objective based maps, land mines are super effective. i not only use them for defense, but i also protect the bombs with mines when on offense. and for the hacking maps, sometimes i'll put a couple around me before hacking. as people get better, they may lose their effectiveness (nobody seems to take out their pistol to destroy them), but for now, they are super deadly.
-when driving a vehicle, watch out for teamates -- if you touch them while moving, they'll die and you lose a point. when you see a friendly vehicle around, don't jump infront of it.
-O lets you reload. the animation is subtle.

Well ... there is Undertow and Small Arms on Live Arcade, although I don't think anyone plays them online anymore.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
Gaf seems to like the game, and I love Soldat, so I'm thinking I'll probaly give this a shot.
There's an aiming guide. It has a curve in it and everything, which I'm assuming essentially shows you where the bullet is going to go. That's ridiculous, although maybe because it's controller and not mouse based, it'll make it easier to aim and consequently get good at quickly. Still, having an aiming guide in Soldat would be crazy, since learning to aim is one of the challenges of "becoming good".
The environments are a bit too busy. When you're flying around like crazy shooting at people in Soldat, having props lying around doesn't help at all. Which is why the levels are bare. This looks to be slower paced, though, so I'm guessing they've taken it into consideration.
Neither of them are likely to be game breaking changes, and it's likely, as I've said, that they've looked at all this stuff and made sure it works. Still, I'd imagine it'll be a different experience to Soldat.
edit: Well, heres a vid...
I already posted about it in the Castlevania Chronicles thread, it's a great game. Basically 2D Warhawk without the warhawks.
Also, it was developed by ex-DICE employees.

After playing for awhile last night it's in my opinion one of the best games on PSN right now (multiplayer wise).
So much fun. Definately feels alot like Soldat. Controls are extremely tight, and the multiplayer modes are a shitload of fun. I really like the tanks and jeeps, also the levels are built really well (2 layers you can get to by going through various entrances).
So worth the 10 bucks.
(or maybe just be a little upset)

Gameplay is pretty great for a 2D shooter, and harkens back to the good ol days. I suspect the game is the type that I'll play at the end of the evening to wrap up a night of gaming. Definately something I'll be playing down the road.
This game looks really fun, but it's entirely dependent on its player base. I've been holding out on Calling All Cars! because of this as well; I fear I'm too late to find anyone playing CAC online.
Also, is there any split screen? I doubt it since everything is so tiny already...

Last night I tried out the "download the data" (Espionage) mode.
2 teams of six, one team attempts to get to the other teams data node and download 2 blocks of data. Once downloaded the attacking team has to get it back to their start point where a satelite uplink awaits. The defending team must stop the attackers at all costs. There is also another Objective mode (Sabatoge) that instead of hacking and stealing the data, instead your goal is to destroy the enemies terminals.
This mode was by far the best of the three (deathmatch, team deathmatch and Objective). I spent a good couple of hours playing and I'm looking forward to more tonight.
Indeed. I am curious about this as well. My roommate and I share the PS3 in the house and we enjoy co-op games. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with what the game screen looks like when there's more than one playing on the same console.

Soldat has an aiming guide in the options. It did not take gravity into account, though.
Saw this game on PSN but didn't grasp from the description that it was a Soldat clone, which would have made me buy it reflexively. Will check it out momentarily.
One question, is the grenade launcher as ridicolously (sp) cheap as it is in Soldat? It was one of the major problems for me with the game, as the weapons were really, really unbalanced
So far I like all the weapons.
Hmm. So we'd both have to be in the same screen at all times? Does this even work to play co-op with multiple people on the same console?

So far I've liked all the guns except the laser. I do prefer the sniper or grenade launcher though, they seem pretty effective. Especially when firing down... though must guns are better when firing down - just like real life.
No Co-op same console play.
You can only play over the internet ...
Splitscreen would be insane, and same screen would be even worse.
I'll probably pick this game up at Christmas, getting a shit load of money so I'll just convince someone to buy this for me instead.
Yeah I agree, you really need the big screen all to yourself to really get the most out of this game. There's so much happening all over the map, and because your little solider is so small it makes the gameworld feel that much bigger.

The PS3, however, had other plans.
This game is utterly fantastic. I haven't delved in to online yet but I'm looking forward to it, I'm having a load of fun with the single player.
