The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So I was browsing around the Steam website looking for cheap games to recommend in an H&A thread, and it looks like the whole EA PC catalog is going up on there. Mass Effect, Spore, Warhammer, Fifa Manager 09, and NFS: Undercover are up now with Red Alert 3, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge in the "Coming Soon" section.
Lol Steam to buy EA in 5 years? Regardless, it's good news for consumers.
While it surprises me that EA was the first, I'm not surprised that a big publisher is joining Steam.
Not only is Digital Distribution cheaper (for the publisher, and sometimes the consumer... sometimes) but it is also quickly gaining favor. Combine that with Steam's Anti-Piracy abilities, I imagine many other publishers are looking at Steam favorably.
Can you do that with any other games? I'll give it a try when I get home but I'd be surprised if they let you use Steam bandwidth and whatnot for games you bought in a store.

THis is, however, the first time that EA has signed on to steam.

Yeah, THQ and Activision both have had games up there for awhile but this is the first time (to my knowledge) that a publisher with its own alternative, competing digital distribution platform has put stuff up on Steam.
edit: t Scarab, the difference being Crysis was only published by EA. The games up there now were all developed by internal studios.

Nope. You could get Crysis over Steam at launch,
So really, this is nothing of any significance at all, save for an announcement of upcoming releases over steam?

Nope. Ubisoft have had games on Steam and via their own digital distribution service for a long time.
In fact, this is one of the main reasons they get away with not allowing Europeans to download their games via Steam, offering 'our own digital distribution solution as an alternative' when you contact PR.

Ubisoft has a digital distribution thing? I never knew.

Wait, Ubisoft makes PC games?
Yeah Farcry 2 is one of the most recent. Assassin's Creed had a PC version.
You can purchase and download all of them direct from Ubi, plus get updates and shit.

Ubisoft makes PC games in the same way Valve makes console games.
EA you cunts! Giving America the ability to buy FIFA Manager 09, but not the rest of the world is just mean. I don't even want that particular game, it's just mean.
I hate all these North America only publishers on Steam. Fuck you Atari! Fuck you Ubisoft! And fuck you EA!
Thumbs up if
- They remove their stupid additional DRM and install limits
- They don't gouge international customers by charging them $US89 for a $49 game.
The thread title freaked me out like you wouldn't believe. I thought I was gonna open this up and read "EA has bought Steam. Monthly fees and more restrictive DRM to come shortly."
I don't see the steam pages mentioning any external DRM, so does that mean things like activation limits are gone for Mass Effect?
My brother is getting me Mass Effect for Christmas, I will tell him to return it and get it for me on steam if there is less bullshit to deal with.
Is that an actual feature of steam now to show that information?
I noticed they showed it in the X3: Terran Conflict page, but haven't noticed it on any other games I have looked at. So I figured that information was something that egosoft put up.

Neat.
Or it's a sign that they're happy with Crysis's sales over Steam, and are moving the rest of their catalogue over as a result. Take it as nothing if you like, but it's actually a pretty significant thing if you ask most people.

Did EA have anything to do with Crysis being on Steam?

Since the launch of Crysis Warhead, earlier this year. Crysis and Crysis Warhead were added to Steam at the same time.

EA publish Crysis and the expansion.
And not some quasi third man publishing like how they published Left 4 Dead.
Awesome, I've been holding off on Red Alert 3 because I don't want to dick with multiple D2D/Steam programs and really don't want boxed copies of PC games anymore. To Steam!
Oh son of a bitch, Stalker is $5 this weekend? *sigh* Guess I'll have to buy that too.
edit: oh WTF, Red Alert 3 coming to Steam in January.

I don't think either company could ask for more.
Critical Failures - Havenhold Campaign • August St. Cloud (Human Ranger)
now we only need blizzard to join steam and that would be great.
I saw this when looking through Steam and I found it was like hmm

I doubt it, but I would love to be able to add ea games to steam but there are definitely games I would love to buy from EA on steam.
if it is I hope they are working with valve to allow customers to merge accounts

I'm buying it again just to have it on there...
Don't do that

I wouldn't count on there being no extra DRM. For most games, it took them a couple of days to put up the info.
Not true. Try looking at the Steam pages for Crysis or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky.
Since the launch of Crysis Warhead, earlier this year. Crysis and Crysis Warhead were added to Steam at the same time.
Oh shit really!? I should finally pick that up.
EA publish Crysis and the expansion.

They made it.
Actually no, it's exactly like the L4D publishing. Crytek is one of the "EA Partners", like Valve, id, Doublefine (yay Brutal Legend!), et cetera.
Except for Crysis the EA logo is on the box and is shown when you play the game. This isn't the case with L4D.
So? Valve probably negotiated their way out of using the EA logo. It's all there on the Crytek website, they're an independent studio.
