EA + Steam, together at last

edited December 2008 in Games and Technology
So I was browsing around the Steam website looking for cheap games to recommend in an H&A thread, and it looks like the whole EA PC catalog is going up on there. Mass Effect, Spore, Warhammer, Fifa Manager 09, and NFS: Undercover are up now with Red Alert 3, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge in the "Coming Soon" section.

Lol Steam to buy EA in 5 years? Regardless, it's good news for consumers. :)

I will buy some EA games from Steam in lieu of this news.

I don't think either company could ask for more.

That's really cool, I hope they release the Command and Conquer collection on steam as well

now we only need blizzard to join steam and that would be great.

I saw this when looking through Steam and I found it was like hmm

    $22.49
Buy Europa Universalis: Rome - Gold Edition

Includes: SPORE™, Europa Universalis: Rome - Gold Edition

    Interesting Spore Price

While it surprises me that EA was the first, I'm not surprised that a big publisher is joining Steam.

Not only is Digital Distribution cheaper (for the publisher, and sometimes the consumer... sometimes) but it is also quickly gaining favor. Combine that with Steam's Anti-Piracy abilities, I imagine many other publishers are looking at Steam favorably.

Can you do that with any other games? I'll give it a try when I get home but I'd be surprised if they let you use Steam bandwidth and whatnot for games you bought in a store.

Yeah, THQ and Activision both have had games up there for awhile but this is the first time (to my knowledge) that a publisher with its own alternative, competing digital distribution platform has put stuff up on Steam.

edit: t Scarab, the difference being Crysis was only published by EA. The games up there now were all developed by internal studios.

Nope. Ubisoft have had games on Steam and via their own digital distribution service for a long time.

In fact, this is one of the main reasons they get away with not allowing Europeans to download their games via Steam, offering 'our own digital distribution solution as an alternative' when you contact PR.

I don't see the steam pages mentioning any external DRM, so does that mean things like activation limits are gone for Mass Effect?

Is that an actual feature of steam now to show that information?

I noticed they showed it in the X3: Terran Conflict page, but haven't noticed it on any other games I have looked at. So I figured that information was something that egosoft put up.

Or it's a sign that they're happy with Crysis's sales over Steam, and are moving the rest of their catalogue over as a result. Take it as nothing if you like, but it's actually a pretty significant thing if you ask most people.

I wouldn't count on there being no extra DRM. For most games, it took them a couple of days to put up the info.
