So my internet is slower than usual, and my mother called sympatico to ask about and the woman said that our connection is showing as being much slower than it should be.
Anybody know of maybe a quick solution or something?
It's no big deal, but it would save me from having to deal with customer support.
Reboot everything (modem, router, pc). If you have a wireless network make sure it's secure and no one is leeching off it. Run anti spyware programs to make sure you don't have anything leeching on your own computer. If none of that fixes it, the slowdown isn't on your end.
If it's showing up to the woman working for the company, wouldn't that be something on their side then? I don't think they can see how fast you're pulling down, just how fast you're capable of pulling it down.
There's a list of crap they'll run you through, but its the same list that they'd use for a new service that doesent have a (proper) signal, so some of it isnt gonna apply (check to see that your modem isnt filtered and other "duh" stuff like that).
Double check that any non-modem device using a phoneline is filtered, especially if you've got any new phones in the home, fax machines and whatnot.
Other stuff on the list will rarely affect your service in a noticeable way (having the modem too close to other electronics that can cause interference, like monitors and whatever, or having it on a carpet, causing heat issues, etc)
It's easily possible that something in the wiring between your house and their central office shit itself (or the modem itself), and that's something that's outside of your hands. Jump through their hoops (the list) and they'll escalate the problem over to whoever takes care of it. If they find nothing wrong with the wiring, they'll either replace the modem or send someone out, or reduce the speed of your service because of excessive noise on the line, blah blah blah I'm glad I quit that job >_>
edit: there's no quick solution. Either the problem is minimal and is something you can fix by checking the wiring on your end (filters being the most important part) or it's something that you wont be able to fix without talking to them. tech support is available 24/7, so if you dont want to deal with wierd accents or if you think that tech is a moron (all too possible), just call back at a later time.

DSL <---Maybe you need rewiring for your phoneline.
