setting up a monitor

i just got a brand spankin' new 19" widescreen monitor and tried to hook it up as a secondary display on my laptop. the problem is that everything is being horizontally stretched on the monitor. the highest resolution i can set it to is 1280x800 and i am assuming this is due to a GPU limitation as the max resolution on the monitor is 1440x900.
any suggestions?
